Trenton Takes Three of Four From 'Cats

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Trenton's Brett Marshall earned his league-best 10th win and the Thunder homered twice to defeat New Britain, 3-1 on Sunday afternoon before 5,558 fans at New Britain Stadium.

Marshall (10-3) limited the Rock Cats to two hits and struck out six in 5 2/3 innings.

"Marshall's tough," said Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith. "He's been tough against us twice this season. It didn't look like we had much offense going."

B.J. Hermsen matched Marshall at the start of the game as he retired eight of the first 10 batters he faced and didn't allow a hit through the first three frames. In the fourth, he served up a leadoff home run to Addison Maruszak - his 10th of the year - that put the Thunder on the board, 1-0. David Adams and Zoilo Almonte followed with consecutive singles before Luke Morton laced a single into right field to plate Adams for the 2-0 advantage.

The Thunder repeated the leadoff home run feat in the fifth inning when Neil Medchill launched a solo shot over the right field wall to extend their lead, 3-0.

The Rock Cats avoided a shutout with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Trenton reliever John Meloan issued a one-out walk to Chris Colabello. Evan Bigley lined a base hit into center before Deibinson Romero singled to left to score Colabello. Meloan retired the next two batters to notch his third save.

Smith pointed out that the Rock Cats had plenty of opportunities to get back into the game before the ninth inning.

"I think we had four different times with runners in scoring position," said Smith.

The Rock Cats were just 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Hermsen (5-5) scattered six hits for three runs in six innings.

ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME : LHP Edgar Ibarra hurled two shutout innings without a hit allowed in relief to keep the Rock Cats within striking distance. He struck out two.
