Recognizing the role sports can play in developing and advancing women as leaders, the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League and NBA 2K League are supporting the national dialogue on women's empowerment. Through leaguewide efforts that celebrate the accomplishments of women in sports and amplify the voices of fans, players and employees, the leagues are calling for all women and girls to be treated with dignity and respect.
Women's History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28. It authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as "Women's History Week." Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month. Every president since 1995 has issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month."
