Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS - Austin FC announced on Thursday that the Club will host Liga MX Apertura 2021 title-winners Atlas FC in a preseason friendly match at Q2 Stadium on Wednesday, February 16 at 8pm CDT.
Austin FC Season Ticket Members will receive the February 16 match against Atlas as part of their season ticket membership. Season Ticket Members will have February 16 match tickets uploaded to their SeatGeek accounts on Friday, January 14 at approximately 2pm CDT. Oak Collective Waitlist members will have access to a ticket pre-sale for the match at 10am CDT on Friday, January 14. For all other buyers, tickets will go on sale to the general public at 2pm CDT on Friday, January 14 at www.austinfc.com and www.q2stadium.com.
"Austin FC is honored to host the defending Liga MX champions in Q2 Stadium, and we welcome the opportunity to continue showcasing the Austin soccer community to new audiences as we enter the 2022 season," said Austin FC President Andy Loughnane.
Based in Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco, Atlas are the current Liga MX champions. Atlas defeated Club León on penalty kicks in the two-legged Apertura 2021 Final last December, claiming the Club's first Liga MX title since the 1950-1951 season. Atlas is managed by Argentine Diego Cocca, who took over in 2020.
In addition to its two (2) Liga MX titles, Atlas has won four (4) Copa MX titles and four (4) Campeón de Campeones titles. Since its founding in 1916, Atlas has developed some of the Mexican men's national team's most famous names, including legendary El Tri defender Rafael Márquez, Andrés Guardado, and Jared Borgetti.
"We are honored to be invited to play this type of friendly match at the international level, especially in the United States and Texas where a large part of our loyal rojinegros supporters live," said José Riestra, CEO of Atlas FC. "It is very gratifying to be able to get closer to the more than 3 million Atlas FC fans we have in the States."
