Portland Sea Dogs News Release
SEA DOGS SHUTOUT LAST NIGHT - Portland was shutout 9-0 last night by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the first game of the series this week. Jose Butto was awarded the victory tossing 6.0 shutout innings allowing five hits while walking one and striking out four. Brayan Bello was given his first loss of the season pitching 5.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. Devlin Granberg finished the night with two of the five hits by the Sea Dogs reaching base with two singles and recording his fourth stolen base of the season.
WHY ARE WE PLAYING TWO? - The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies will play two games tonight because of a postponed game from earlier in the season. The two teams last met in June. The second game of the doubleheader is a postponement of the June 19th game which was delayed due to inclement weather.
GOMEZ STAYS STRONG - Rio Gomez pitched 1.1 perfect inning again last night, with one strikeout. He has not allowed an earned run since June 25 versus the Somerset Patriots. Gomez has not issued a walk since June 13th against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Since June 13th, Gomez has appeared in 12 games and has pitched 15.1 innings. He has allowed five runs on 13 hits while walking one batter and striking out 20.
MURPHY MAKES HIS DEBUT - Chris Murphy entered 2021 ranked by Baseball America as the Red Sox' No. 13 prospect. He started season with High-A Greenville Drive. He appeared in 14 games and tossed 68.1 innings allowing 36 runs (32 earned) on 62 hits while walking 23 and striking out 81. He will start game one for the Sea Dogs tonight.
CHECKING IN WITH OUR OLYMPIANS - Four current Sea Dogs are in Tokyo competing in the Olympics for their respective countries. Triston Casas (USA), Roldani Baldwin (Dominican Republic), Denyi Reyes (Dominican Republic) and Joey Meneses (Mexico) are all playing at the international level. Casas leads all players in Tokyo with eight RBIs and is tied with Israel's Danny Valencia for the most homers. Team USA and Team Dominican Republic are both still eligible for medals.
ON THE MOUND - RHP Chris Murphy and RHP Frank German will start tonight for the Sea Dogs. Murphy will be making his Sea Dogs debut after joining the team from the Greenville Drive. German will be facing the Rumble Ponies for the third time this season. He started 6/15 and pitched 5.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five. German then made a relief appearance 6/20 and tossed 3.0 innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out four. The lone run was solo homer.
