Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies Split Doubleheader

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Portland Sea Dogs and Binghamton Rumble Ponies split this evening's doubleheader at Mirabito Stadium. Portland took game one, 5-2 and dropped game two, 8-2. The Sea Dogs are now 48-30 and are 1.5 games out of first place behind the Somerset Patriots.

Chris Murphy earned his first Double-A win in his first appearance at this level. He pitched 6.0 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk. He fanned eight batters, one shy of tying his career-high. Connor Grey was given the loss tossing 5.0 innings allowing five runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out five.

In game one, the Rumble Ponies took the early lead after a lead-off homer by Luis Carpio in the third inning.

The Sea Dogs tied the game in the top of the fifth inning. After Kole Cottam was hit-by-a-pitch, he moved to third on a single to right field by Jeisson Rosario. Tanner Nishioka then lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield and the game was tied, 1-1.

Portlnad took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning. Devlin Granberg led off with a double then moved to third on a single by Nick Sogard. Connor Grey then threw a wild pitch allowing Granberg to score and the Sea Dogs led, 2-1. Pedro Castellanos drilled a ground rule double to the left field corner scoring Sogard and extending the Sea Dogs' lead, 3-1. Tyreque Reed then drew a walk and Portland had runners at first and second base. Hudson Potts lined an RBI single to left field bringing home Sogard and Portland led 4-1. Jeisson Rosario then scored Reed on an RBI groundout to the first baseman and Portland continued to lead, 5-1.

Binghamton scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a lead-off homer by Jake Mangum.

In game two, Baty led-off with a home run for the Rumble Ponies in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hayden Senger drew a lead-off walk then moved to third on a single by Jake Mangum. Carlos Rincon then hit a two-run double to left field. Rincon then scored on an RBI single by Luis Carpio and Binghamton extended their lead, 4-0.

After a lead-off single to left field by Tanner Nishioka, Devlin Granberg blasted a two-run homer to left field and Portland continued to trail, 4-2.

Rincon connected for a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Rumble Ponies took game two, 8-2.

Dustin Beggs was given the win for Binghamton tossing 5.2 innings allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Frank German was given the loss pitching 4.2 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out five.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies meet again tomorrow, August 5 at Mirabito Stadium. Portland will send RHP Josh Winckowski to the mound while Binghamton will have RHP Adam Oller on the bump.
