Owen Sound Attack News Release
Sarnia, ON - The Owen Sound Attack returned to action after the Christmas break with a trip down highway 21 to take on the Sarnia Sting. Holding the longest current winning streak in the OHL going into the game, the Attack hoped to make it six in a row at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
Brayden Guy tallied the first of the game for the Sting, but Kevin Hancock was able to wait out the Sarnia netminder minutes later after a pretty pass from Maksim Sushko to tie things up at 1. Offsetting penalties and 4 on 4 action closed out the period that would end 1-1.
The second period continued the back and forth action as Hugo Leufvenius finished an odd man rush just 45 seconds into the frame. Sarnia kept the pressure coming, and Mack Guzda was ready for it with a huge pad save to keep the difference at one. Shortly after, new acquisition Adam McMaster was interfered with and the refs sent the Attack to the powerplay. With Suzuki and Phillips playing for Team Canada, Coach Todd Gill has been creative with his special teams and it paid off. Daylon Groulx tipped in his 10th of the season off a point blast from Carter Robertson with the extra assist going to rookie Nolan Seed. The back and forth action continued with Jacob Perreault adding to his OHL rookie scoring lead with his 18th of the season and the Sarnia Sting held a 3-2 lead after 40 despite sustained pressure by the Attack.
The 3rd period began with adversity for Owen Sound as the Sting scored three in rapid succession, turning a close lead into a big advantage. After weathering the storm, the team began to fight back and Maksim Sushko found the back of the net to make it a 6-3 affair with just over ten minutes to play in regulation.
The Attack didn't give up but the team couldn't mount the comeback and the winning streak ends at 5 in a row as they fall to the Sting 7-3.
The three stars of the game were claimed by Sarnia, with Jacob Perreault taking 1st star after a 2 goal 2 assist game, Ryan McGregor the 2nd star and Mitch Eliot taking 3rd place honours. The Hatten Home Building Centre hardest working player of the game goes to newest Attack member Adam McMaster.
The Owen Sound Attack will be back in action tomorrow night as they take on the Kitchener Rangers for the first time this season in the friendly confines of the Bayshore. Puck drop is at 7:30 for the 1st of 8 meetings between the clubs.
