Owen Sound Attack News Release

As the OHL trade deadline loomed, teams across the league made a flurry of moves to bolster their team for the stretch run or to build for the future. As Owen Sound headed to Peterborough, Daylon Groulx made his way to Ottawa as the newest member of the 67s. While the Attack were on their way, the Petes made their own move acquiring Team Canada Gold Medal Winner Akil Thomas from the Niagara IceDogs. While Thomas didn't make it into the lineup for the evening's game against the Attack, the Petes still posed a threat with Nick Robertson and Semyon Der-Auginchintsev holding down the top line.

Owen Sound got off to a great start at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, outshooting the Petes 7-0 early. Kaleb Lawrence was the first on the scoresheet after he tapped in the rebound off a Brady Lyle point shot. Less than three minutes later, Matt Philip got his stick on another juicy rebound in front of Hunter Jones to make it 2-0 for the visitors early in the game. The Petes got back into the game, outshooting the Attack 11-7 the rest of the way, but Mack Guzda was there to keep the puck out of the net and lead the Bears to the first intermission up 2-0. Shots after 20 minutes were 14-11 for the road team.

The Attack have had their troubles in the second period all season long and to beat the Petes they would have to maintain their two goal lead in the middle frame. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Nick Robertson had different ideas as he scored at the 8:20 mark to cut the Attack lead to one. Deni Goure put the idea of a second period comeback to bed when he tipped in an Igor Chibrikov point shot a minute later to restore the two goal advantage. Guzda would shut the door the rest of the way, turning away 7 Peterborough shots in the period. After 40 minutes the Attack led in shots 22-19 and on the scoreboard 3-1.

Peterborough started the third the same way they ended the second, with a flurry of shots on the Owen Sound net. Mack Guzda stood tall, turning away their efforts and keeping the Attack up two. Adam McMaster was put into the zone by Aidan Dudas and he put on an edgework clinic before beating Jones glove side to extend the Attack lead to three. Nick Robertson scored his second of the night on a late power play to cut the lead to two in the final minute, but Barret Kirwin answered immediately on the empty net for his 18th of the season to put the game to bed. The empty net goal would start the road trip off with a win for the Owen Sound Attack 5-2 over the Peterborough Petes.

The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player was Kaleb Lawrence. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Mack Guzda, Nick Robertson and Brady Lyle.

The Attack continue their road trip tomorrow night in Kingston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be seen on Rogers Channel 53, heard on 560 CFOS Bear Radio and streamed online at OHLLive.com. The road trip wraps up Sunday afternoon against the Ottawa 67s at 2 p.m.

Owen Sound returns home next Wednesday against the Barrie Colts at 7 p.m. There will be a pregame ceremony honouring Aidan Dudas and Alan Letang winning the gold medal with Team Canada at the World Juniors. Tickets are available at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office and online.
