OHL Owen Sound Attack

Attack Lose to Four Goal Effort from Gogolev and Storm

December 10, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

It was Scott Walker night at the Bayshore as Owen Sound recognized the former Plater with a banner unveiling that will soon hang from the rafters of the rink. An emotional speech from the former defenseman stirred up the crowd pregame as he was honoured by the organization for his contributions to the city and the sport of hockey. Attack Head Coach Al Letang will be missing the next month as he joins Hockey Canada for the National Junior Team, so assistant coach Jordan Hill took the reins behind the Owen Sound bench. Mack Guzda received the start for the Attack while in the away net Owen Bennett filled in for Nico Daws who is at the Team Canada selection camp.

Bennett decided to put on his best Nico Daws impression in the opening frame, stopping all ten Attack shots that went his way. Owen Sound was able to generate good pressure with the Lawrence-Samanski-Groulx line, but couldn't beat the Guelph netminder. It was a two man show for the Guelph Storm in the period, with Pavel Gogolev and Cam Hillis pairing up twice for markers in the first. After a broken stick led to a puck fluttering into the slot, Hillis fed it to Gogolev for the opening marker less than four minutes into the game. On a two on two rush later in the period, Hillis once again set up Gogolev to double the deficit for the Attack. After one period of play, Owen Sound was down 2-0. The shots on goal were 13-10 for the Storm.

Things turned around to start the second as the Attack began to leave their mark on the game. Ethan Burroughs fed Griffin Wilson on the rush and he made no mistake, sniping it past Bennett to open the scoring for Owen Sound. Four minutes later, Brady Lyle went bardown on the power play to tie the game at 2 apiece. Unfortunately, Pavel Gogolev became an unstoppable force this evening and after capitalizing on an Attack turnover he recorded his hat trick in just over thirty minutes of game time and the Attack found themselves trailing once again. The Bears had a late power play in the period but were unable to capitalize before the buzzer sounded to end the first forty minutes. Shots on goal after two periods of play were 26-20 for Guelph.

The Owen Sound Attack needed a goal to tie things up in the third period against the stingiest defense in the OHL. It wouldn't be an easy task, and despite solid chances for the home team, the puck seemed to just miss the Guelph net by inches on multiple occasions. Pavel Gogolev's hot night continued when he score his fourth goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining to regain a two goal lead for the opponents. Not all hope was lost however when a skillful move by Brady Lyle ended with Kirwin banging in a rebound for his 15th of the season to make it a 4-3 game. A late power play was unsuccessful for the Attack, and Guzda was pulled for the extra attacker. Owen Sound couldn't find the tying goal and would fall to the Storm 4-3.

Ethan Burroughs was the Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game. The Owen Sound Bug Juice North Stars Three Stars were Brady Lyle, Cam Hillis and Pavel Gogolev.

Owen Sound hits the road this weekend with stops in Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and North Bay. The Attack return home next Wednesday for their final game before the Christmas break against the Kitchener Rangers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the MacVicar & McComb Sutton Realty Attack Box Office and online.
