Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack almost completed a perfect road trip on Monday, Feb. 15 when they travelled to Oshawa to take on the Generals in a Family Day game.

In search of their 3rd straight road win, Owen Sound stormed out to a 4-1 lead after the first period but was unable to hang on to their advantage, as the Generals would comeback to grab a 5-4 victory in overtime.

Thomas Schemitsch would score twice while Damir Sharipzyanov added a pair of assists in the loss, the final of two meetings with the Generals on the year.

Owen Sound would kick off the scoring on the afternoon and it would a couple of former Generals connecting to do damage to the home side.

With 8:11 gone in the opening period, Jacob Busch came off of the half wall and blasted a snapshot through the fivehole of Jeremy Brodeur put the Attack up 1-0. Busch's 6th of the season was assisted by Josh Sterk, also a former member of the Generals, and defenceman Damir Sharipzyanov.

Oshawa wouldn't lay dormant though, and just 39 seconds later the game was tied 1-1.

With Bryson Cianfrone sitting in the penalty box, the Generals' powerplay unit went to work and it would be Anthony Cirelli making good on the man advantage by beating a screened Michael McNiven from the point.

Cirelli's goal gave the home crowd some life, but a pair of back to back powerplay goals by defenceman Thomas Schemitsch quickly deflated that.

With Mitch Vande Sompel sitting in the box for Oshawa, Jaden Lindo made a highlight reel no-look pass to Schemitsch who easily tapped the puck into the open cage to restore Owen Sound's one goal lead with 11:09 gone in the opening frame. Kevin Hancock also drew an assist on the play, which would mark Schemitsch's 7th goal of the year.

The Florida Panthers draft pick would then put Owen Sound up 3-1 on another Baywest Nissan Powerplay just over 90 seconds later, using outside speed to take a pass from Sharipzyanov and fool Broduer with a backhander that was initially a pass attempt to Jaden Lindo.

Owen Sound would add another before the first period ended, making it a perfect 3 for 3 on the man advantage in the opening 20 minutes.

Bryson Cianfrone would join the goal party, going five-hole from the slot with 1:53 remaining in the period to make it 4-1. Nick Suzuki and Santino Centorame grabbed the helpers, which sent the Attack to the dressing room with all of the momentum after a period of action.

That momentum would be stalled by a parade to the penalty box by both squads in the early going of the 2nd period, but despite all of the special teams action the game's next goal would come with the game at even strength.

Right after Jaden Lindo had stepped out of the penalty box, Oshawa's Stephen Templeton would blast a slapshot off of the cross bar and in to cut the Attack lead to 4-2 at the 8:25 mark of the 2nd.

The Generals would then draw within one on the backs of another man advantage, this time taking advantage of Owen Sound's failure to score while up a player.

After a barrage of shots on Jeremy Broduer, the Gens would head down the ice where Lukas Lofquist would corral a bouncing puck before tucking it behind McNiven to make it a 4-3 game with 5:20 left in the middle stanza.

That 4-3 score is how things would stand after 40 minutes of play, thanks in large part to a handful of ten-bell saves by McNiven with time winding down in the 2nd.

Owen Sound and Oshawa would trade chances for much of the 3rd period, and saves by both McNiven and Broduer gave fans the feeling that the 4-3 score would stand as the final.

Oshawa had different ideas though.

With 1:23 remaining in regulation and the Attack on a Paul Davis Systems Penalty kill, Kenny Heuther of the Generals found a way to get his stick on a loose puck and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at four and send it to overtime.

It was in that extra frame that Heuther would complete the comeback for the homeside and play hero, scoring on a 2-on-1 break to make it a thrilling 5-4 win for the Generals.

Heuther would be named the Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game for his heroics while Attack defensemen Thomas Schemitsch and Damir Sharipzyanov were named 2nd and 3rd stars respectively.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 38-34 for the Attack on the afternoon, and despite the OT loss, the Attack were able to complete their roadtrip by picking up five of a possible six points while travelling over 1500km in four days.

There is no rest for the weary, as the Attack get right back on the horse when they host the Kitchener Rangers on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7:00pm.

Tickets for that game are available at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.
