Spirit Drop Road Game to Sting 11-4

SARNIA, ONT. - The Saginaw Spirit headed to the Sarnia Sports & Entertainment Centre for a midday matchup against their West Division opponent, the Sarnia Sting. Monday's contest marks the third of six games this season, and the first game of a home-and-home set for the Sting and Spirit. The Sarnia Sting netted five goals in the first period en route to an11-4 defeat to the Saginaw Spirit. Matt Mistele led the way for Sarnia, scoring five goals on the afternoon.

In the first period, the Sarnia Sting took the reigns early, scoring five goals before the first intermission. Matt Mistele scored twice, while Patrick White, Kevin Spinozzi, and Troy Lajeunesse each recorded a tally to take a 5-0 lead over the Spirit. Midway through the first period, Cameron Zanussi suited up to relieve Evan Cormier of his goaltending duties. Sarnia outshot Saginaw 15-4 in the first period.

The Saginaw Spirit came out swinging in the second period, as Kris Bennett netted two consecutive goals to keep the Spirit alive. Just 59 seconds into the middle frame, Kris Bennett slipped the puck past Justin Fazio to put the Spirit on the board. Bennett struck again at 2:24, notching his 19th goal of the season and putting the Spirit within three-goals of the Sting. The Spirit scoring continued as Kirill Maksimov picked up a turnover in front of the Sting net and registered his fifth goal of his rookie campaign. The Sting's 5-3 lead held until the Spirit were whistled for hooking. Matt Mistele's hat-trick power play goal doubled up the Spirit by a score of 6-3. Sarnia's Ryan McGregor and Nikita Korostelev each picked up a point and gave the Sting an 8-3 lead heading into the second period intermission. Shots in the second period favored the Saginaw Spirit, 12-11.

Mitchell Stephens sliced the Sting's score in half 3:54 into the third period, as he beat Justin Fazio glove side to make it an 8-4 game in favor of Sarnia. Stephens' 15th goal of the season extended his point streak to five games. The score held until 10:48 of the third period, as Ryan McGregor netted his second goal of the afternoon to give the Sting a 9-4 advantage. The Sting didn't stop there as Matt Mistele put home his fourth goal in Monday's contest and gave the Sting a 10-4 lead at 13:49 of the third period. Mistele netted one more goal with nine seconds left in the final period, securing a comfortable 11-4 win for the Sarnia Sting. Final shots favored Sarnia, 38-28.
