Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United played to a 0-0 draw against LAFC Wednesday night at BMO Stadium, extending the team's unbeaten run to five matches. Brad Guzan made eight saves, doubling his previous best from this season and just one away from his all-time club record, and recorded his 50th MLS regular season clean sheet with Atlanta.
Guzan made his 150th MLS regular season start for Atlanta in goal, becoming the first player in club history to reach 150 starts and the 15th goalkeeper in MLS history to reach that mark with a single club. He was called into action early and often throughout the match, making five saves in the first half to keep the score level.
His first save came in the 22nd minute when a cross from the right side found Matheusz Bogusz at the far post and Guzan came out to block the LAFC striker's effort on goal. Atlanta's captain made another crucial save in the 42nd minute, diving to his left to deny a free kick attempt from Jose Cifuentes.
As LAFC continued to put pressure on Atlanta's backline in the second half, Guzan again came up with a key save in the 66th minute, this time on Denis Buoanga. Stipe Biuk played a cross from the right side that reached Buoanga on the edge of the six-yard box where the forward turned and fired a shot from close-range. Guzan reacted quickly and was able to keep a strong right hand to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
LAFC was given a penalty in the 70th minute as Juanjo Purata was ruled to have taken down Carlos Vela inside the box. Guzan denied Vela's initial attempt with an impressive diving save to his left, however referee Joe Dickerson judged him to have stepped in front of the goal line prior to the kick. Vela then struck his second penalty attempt over the crossbar.
Atlanta had an opportunity in the 83rd minute when Caleb Wiley received the ball inside the left side of the box and cut the ball back to fellow Homegrown Ajani Fortune, however his shot went just wide of the near post.
Atlanta United (6-4-7, 25 points) returns to action when it hosts D.C. United on Saturday, June 10 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m. EDT, MLS Season Pass, 92.9 The Game, La Mejor). All Atlanta United matches are available with an MLS Season Pass subscription, located on the Apple TV app.
