CFL Toronto Argonauts

Argo award nominees announced

November 2, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Toronto Argonauts News Release

Mississauga - The Toronto chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has selected the following Toronto Argonauts as the team nominees for the CFL Outstanding Player Awards:

QB Damon Allen - Most Outstanding Player

LB Kevin Eiben - Most Outstanding Canadian Player

LB Michael Fletcher - Most Outstanding Defensive Player

OL Jeff Keeping - Most Outstanding Rookie

K/P Noel Prefontaine - Most Outstanding Special Teams Player

OG Jude St. John - Most Outstanding Lineman

This is the first time Damon Allen has been selected as the Argonauts' Most Outstanding Player. Allen led the Double Blue to a first place finish in the East for the first time since 1997 and passed for more than 5,000 yards for first time in his 21-year career. Allen is among the CFL leaders in passing touchdowns, fewest interceptions thrown and passer efficiency. He helped to produce three 1,000+ yard receivers for just the second time in Club history.

LB Kevin Eiben is among the team nominees for the second consecutive season. Eiben burst on to the scene as a starter in 2004 and finds himself among the best once again. In 2005, Kevin became the first Argonaut to record 100+ defensive tackles in back-to-back seasons and again leads the CFL in tackles with 107. Eiben also leads the Argos with 7 tackles for a loss.

LB Michael Fletcher is the team spark-plug. He sets the tone for the League's best defence and is one of the most versatile players in the Club. Against Calgary on Canada Day, he started at linebacker and played every down on special teams; then, late in the game he was moved to defensive back and made a key interception. Fletcher finished second on the team in tackles with 84 and tied for the team lead with three interceptions.

The Argonauts' Superman, Jeff Keeping, is a rookie out of the University of Western Ontario who has been dubbed the triple-threat. It is not uncommon for Keeping to play special teams, nose tackle, tight end and offensive tackle all in the same contest. He is also one of only two reserve o-lineman who dresses each game. Keeping has very quickly earned the respect of his teammates and his coaches.

This is the second consecutive season K/P Noel Prefontaine has been recognized as the Club's Most Outstanding Special Teams player. Pre is one of the most consistent kickers in the CFL year-in and year-out. He leads the League in field goal percentage and is third in the CFL in points scored. Prefontaine is second in the CFL in both punting and kickoff average and is a perennial league leader in these categories. He may also be the toughest kicker around, as he will often run down field after a kick and leave the returner quivering on the turf.

Toronto's offensive line has been steady all season and OG Jude St. John has been spectacular. St. John worked hard in the off-season to gain speed and strength and his hard work has paid big dividends. The left side of the field is a safe haven for QB Damon Allen when St. John is there to offer a bone-crushing block. Jude's play has helped his quarterback to the best season of his career.

The 2004 Grey Cup Champion Toronto Argonauts are North America's oldest professional football club, having celebrated their 130th anniversary in 2003. The Toronto Argonauts have 15 Grey Cup championships to their credit. For more information about ticket packages, please contact the sales team at (416) 341-ARGO.
