Outstanding Eskimos nominated for player awards
November 2, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Edmonton Elks News Release
The local chapter of the Football Reporters of Canada has named the Edmonton Eskimo nominees for the Rogers CFL Player Awards.
Ricky Ray was the unanimous selection as the club's Outstanding Player. Ray has enjoyed an outstanding season to date completing 455 of 675 passes for 5282 yards and 25 touchdowns. Ray is only the third quarterback in team history to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a season. Ray also set new Eskimo standards for attempts and completions in a season. This is the second nomination for Ray, the first coming in 2003.
Kelly Wiltshire was also a unanimous selection as the Eskimos' Outstanding Canadian. One of the league's hardest hitting safeties, Wiltshire has brought years of experience and solid play to the Eskimo defensive backfield.
Joe Montford gets the nod as the Green and Gold's Outstanding Defensive Player. Montford leads an outstanding Eskimo defense with 10 sacks and has added 27 defensive tackles and 4 forced fumbles.
Kevin Lefsrud gets the nomination as the Eskimos' Outstanding Lineman. Demonstrating determination and versatility, Lefsrud has played both guard and centre this year and been equally effective in both spots.
Tony Tompkins takes home two nominations as both the Outstanding Rookie (unanimous selection) and Outstanding Special Teams Player. The first year Eskimo currently leads the CFL with 823 punt return yards and has taken three punts and a kickoff back for TD's in 2005.
The Edmonton Eskimos have qualified for the playoffs for a 34th consecutive season. For more information on the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club, please visit our web site at www.esks.com.
