Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Football Reporters of Canada announced today the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' nominees for the Rogers CFL Player Awards.
The Bomber nominees include:
running back Charles Roberts for Outstanding Player;
punter Jon Ryan for Outstanding Canadian and Special Teams Player;
offensive tackle Matt Sheridan for Outstanding Offensive Lineman.
defensive end Gavin Walls for Outstanding Rookie and Outstanding Defensive Player;
Walls had one of the best seasons ever for a first-year Bomber defender. He was tied for the league lead in quarterback sacks going into the final week of the regular season with 12. He also scored two TDs, one on an interception return and another on a fumble return. His final numbers also included 40 tackles, three special teams tackles and four pass knockdowns. Walls' strong play didn't go unnoticed around the league. He was named the Rogers CFL Lineman of the Week an astounding four times in 2005.
Roberts rushed for a career best 1,624 yards on 290 carries in 2005. Both marks were tops in the CFL this season. He also topped the league in yards from scrimmage with 2,098. Roberts also added 474 yards on 49 catches. His 12 rushing TDs were second best in the league.
Ryan sent shivers down the spines of opposing special teams players and coaches every time he stepped onto the field. He led the league in gross punting yards (5,967) and gross punting average (50.6 yards), the latter of which set a new CFL standard. Ryan also led all punters in net punting yards (4,997) and net punting average (42.3 yards). He had a season-best 80-yard punt against the B.C. Lions.
Sheridan was one of only two Bomber O-linemen to dress for all 18 games this season and started 17 of them. He was part of an offensive line that paved the way for the league's leading rusher (Roberts) and gave up only 31 sacks. Sheridan also displayed his versatility, playing both centre and guard and even doing some long-snapping. He received the highest grade of all Bomber O-lineman in 15 of his 17 starts, averaging 84.0 in 15 of his 17 starts.
