Anticlimactic Ending Marrs Fantastic Pitcher's Duel

Asheville Tourists News Release

WINSTON-SALEM- Talk about a letdown. Over 7,000 people at Truist Stadium were confused and baffled as their Winston-Salem Dash scored the winning run to beat the Asheville Tourists 2-1 in 11 innings Saturday night. The Dash had a runner at third base with one out in the bottom of the 11th and before a pitch was thrown the base umpire stopped play, called a balk, and ended the game.

It was a brutal ending to a masterful pitching performance from both teams. The two teams combined to go 0-for-21 with runners in scoring position and a number of those plate appearances just needed the batter to make some sort of contact to drive in a run.

Tommy Sacco Jr. gave the Tourists their only run with an RBI fielder's choice in the top of the second inning. Asheville had the bases loaded with no outs in that frame but were held to one run. The Tourists had a runner at third with one out in the tenth inning and had runners at second and third with no outs in the 11th. Asheville came away empty-handed on both occasions.

Winston-Salem hit a solo Home Run in the fourth before squandering golden opportunities to win the game in the eighth and tenth innings.

Valente Bellozo was a menace out of the bullpen for Asheville. Bellozo pitched five shutout innings, the sixth through the tenth, with eight strikeouts. Deylen Miley churned out another good outing with four innings pitched and Ronny Garcia pitched a shutout frame as well.
