Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Ben Cowles delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to hand the Hudson Valley Renegades a 4-3 win over the Rome Braves on Friday night at Heritage Financial Park. With a win and a Greensboro Grasshoppers loss, the Renegades pushed their first-place lead in the SAL North to two games with five games left to play in the first half. Hudson Valley's magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at four.

In the ninth with the game tied at three, Kyle Battle was hit by a pitch on the arm to place the go-ahead run on base. The next batter, Spencer Jones, singled to left field to put runners at first and second and just one out. Cowles then laced a 2-2 pitch from Peyton Williams (1-1) to right-center to score Battle and deliver the 'Gades a 4-3 win. For the Renegades, it was their fourth walk-off win of the season, and second in as many nights.

Rome began the scoring in the first with a run against Juan Carela on a sacrifice fly from Keshawn Ogans. Carela dazzled after that, tying his career-highs of 7.0 innings and 10 strikeouts. It was the third straight start for Carela that he has fanned 10 batters, and he became the first Renegades pitcher to strike out 10-or-more batter in three straight starts in team history. Additionally, the 21-year-old starter has allowed three or fewer hits in three of his last four starts.

Spencer Jones promptly tied the game at one in the bottom of the first with a solo blast to right-center field, his ninth home run of the season, and third lead off home run.

Hudson Valley took a 2-1 advantage in the sixth on an RBI double from Anthony Garcia that scored Cowles. The Renegades outfielder finished the night 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

After Stephen Paolini led off the top of the eighth with a walk, Kevin Kilpatrick hit a go-ahead two-run home run to left field off Indigo Diaz to hand the lead back to Rome at 3-2.

Hudson Valley responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame on an infield single by Antonio Gómez after three of the first four hitters reached against Patrick Halligan. Diaz and Harrison Cohen navigated around two baserunners in the top of the ninth to set the stage for Cowles' heroics.

With the win, the Renegades improved their record to 36-25, reaching a new high-water mark on the season of 11 games over .500. The Renegades and Braves continue their six-game series on Saturday at Heritage Financial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 5:45 p.m. The Renegades will send RHP Matt Sauer (MiLB Rehab) to the bump opposite of RHP Tyler Owens (0-5, 2.63) for the Braves.

Renegades Record: 36-25
