Another Adenhart gem gives Kernels a lift
May 19, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Starter Nick Adenhart turned in another superb performance for the Kernels (20-22) as they snapped a two game slide on a Friday night with a 4-1 win over the Swing of the Quad Cities in front of a season-high 2,378 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Adenhart struck out six Swing batters and held the visitors to just one run on four hits over seven innings of work to improve his perfect record to 7-0 and lower his already miniscule ERA to 1.56. In 57 2/3 innings of work this year the right-hander has allowed just 10 earned runs.
Swing second baseman Jose Martinez was the only batter to crack the Kernels' ace, swatting an Adenhart offering over the wall in left for a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Adenhart got all the run support he needed in the first inning when the Kernels struck for two runs. Brad Coon led off the inning with a double to left and Marco Albano walked before a passed ball allowed each man to move up with one out. Dallas Morris then lifted a single to center off Swing starter Jaime Garcia (2-3) to plate Coon. Albano then came home on a one-base rip by Flint Wipke.
The Kernels would give Adenhart single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before he would turn the game over to relievers Robert Romero and Ryan Aldridge.
Larry Infante scored on a squeeze bunt by Brad Coon in the fourth and Stantrel Smith came home on a Brett Martinez single in the sixth. Infante doubled Martinez to third but the Swing avoided further damage when a call to the bullpen for Jonathan Mikrut yielded back-to-back outs to end the inning. Aldridge struck out two of the three men he faced in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the year after Romero held the lead with a one-hit performance in the eighth.
The Kernels continue their eight-game homestand on Saturday when they welcome the Western Division-leading Kane County Cougars to Veterans Memorial Stadium for the first postgame fireworks show of the season. Left-hander Kelly Shearer (1-4, 5.27) will face Cougars hurler Vince Mazzaro (3-4, 6.75) at 6:30 p.m.
