Two homers, a rally and a win for the Whitecaps

PEORIA, IL - Mat Joyce slugged a solo home run and had the game-tying RBI double in the eighth inning to spearhead a come from behind 4-3 win for the Whitecaps in Peoria. With the victory, West Michigan earns a 2-2 split in the series against the Chiefs.

Joel Roa, who came into the game 6-for-49 on the season, slugged his first home run of the year to left field and broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning.

Peoria scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead on back-to-back doubles by Dylan Johnston and Jesus Valdez. The hit by Valdez drove in a pair of runs.

Matt Joyce went deep for the second consecutive game when he homered to right in the sixth inning and cut the lead to 3-2. Joyce leads the team with five home runs and 31 RBI.

In the eighth, Joyce and Mike Hollimon went back-to-back with RBI doubles to give West Michigan the lead.

Pedro Cotto collected his second hit of the game in the eighth before he scored the tying run. Cotto is now on a 10-game hitting streak.

Ricky Steik relived Whitecaps starter Sendy Vasquez and pitched two shutout innings to earn the win. Orlando Perdomo threw a scoreless inning for the third consecutive day and picked up his Midwest League-leading 12th save.

Jeff Teasley took the loss and tossed 1.2 innings of relief for Peoria with two runs allowed on four hits.

A Developing Pattern: Each of the last four series played between the Whitecaps in the Chiefs has been split 2-2.
