Swing drop finale, split series

Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities became the latest Midwest League team unable to figure out Nick Adenhart, as the 19-year-old Cedar Rapids hurler led the Kernels to a 4-1 win Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Adenhart became the first Midwest Leaguer to seven wins, as nobody else in the league has yet to register more than five.

The loss snaps a brief two-game winning streak for Quad Cities (17-22), who ends their road trip with a 4-5 record. More than one third of the Cedar Rapids (20-22) wins this year have come with Adenhart on the mound.

Cedar Rapids jumped out in front early, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Sparkplug Brad Coon led off with a double inside of the left field line, and Marco Albano followed with a walk. After each advanced on a passed ball, Dallas Morris and Flint Wipke checked in with back-to-back run scoring singles to put the Kernels out in front, 2-0.

The Swing got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth. Jose Martinez continued his hot streak to open up the inning, turning on a 2-2 pitch and launching his third home run in as many games. The 20-year-old second baseman from Venezuela has registered three of his four home runs and seven of his 12 RBI this season over the past three games.

The Kernels added another run in the fourth when Coon laid down a suicide squeeze bunt that plated Larry Infante. They capped the scoring in the eighth, when an RBI single from Brett Martinez helped chase Swing starter Jaime Garcia from the game, giving Cedar Rapids a 4-1 edge.

Quad Cities tried to rally against Adenhart in the eighth. Bryan Anderson reached base after a two-out strikeout pitch skipped by the catcher to the backstop. After Luis Cotto drew a walk, Casey Rowlett stung a ball to deep center field. But the ball hung in the air just long enough for the fleet-footed Coon to track it down on the run, as he made a basket catch over his shoulder to end the threat.

Adenhart (7-0) was stellar all night long, primarily using a low-to-mid 90 mph fastball with a sharp curveball to stifle a Swing offense that had combined for 15 runs on 25 hits the previous two games. The Angels' prospect allowed only one run on four hits in seven frames, striking out six while walking two.

Garcia (2-3) suffered the loss in his first start since being named the Cardinals' Pitcher of the Month for April. Despite striking out a career-best eight batters, the southpaw from Mexico was also touched for a career-worst nine hits that led to four runs - three earned - in 5.1 innings of work.

Jonathan Mikrut and Matt Trent worked 2.2 perfect innings of relief for Quad Cities, combining for five strikeouts.

Ryan Aldridge (7) earned the save for the Kernels, fanning two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
