Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA - The Burlington Bees (18-21) took advantage of five Lansing errors to pick up a 3-2 win over the Lugnuts (23-17) at Community Field tonight. The win extended the Bees' season-high winning streak to six and completed the Bees' first four-game sweep of the Lugnuts since 1999. RH Matt Kniginyzky (4-2) pitched seven strong innings and struck out a career-high eight for the win. The Bees finish 6-0 on this homestand and are now 12-9 at Community Field for the year. Lansing has lost eight straight on the road.
The Bees scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning against starter Billy Carnline (3-2). Josh Johnson led off with an infield single and Chris McConnell was hit by a pitch. Carlos Arroyo hit a chopper to the mound and reached on a fielder's choice as Johnson was forced at third. Kiel Thibault followed with a bouncer to shortstop that ate up Jesus Gonzalez for the first error and allowed McConnell to score. Brian Pettway's throw to the plate sailed wide and went to the backstop and allowed Arroyo to go to third and Thibault to second for the second error on the play. JP Lowen drove in Arroyo with a sacrifice fly to left and Jeremy Jirschele lined a two-out single to right to drive in Thibault to cap the inning. Carnline would work through six innings and allow five hits and one walk while striking out six. Jordan Timm pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief and Paul Phillips got out of a bases loaded jam to finish the eighth.
Kniginyzky retired the first six batters of the game and didn't allow a hit until the fourth when Jacob Butler led off with a long fly ball down the left field line that went over the wall and was called fair for a leadoff home run despite the protests from the Bees' players and coaches that the ball was foul. Kniginyzky didn't allow another hit until Cory Patton led off the seventh with a double to right-center. Joey Metropoulos singled to right to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, David Hicks brought in Patton with a sacrifice fly to left-center to cut the Bees' lead to 3-2. After a walk, Kniginyzky caught Anthony Hatch looking at strike three to end the inning and set a new career-high with eight strikeouts. Kniginyzky came back out for the eighth, but after a leadoff single, turned the ball over to Eliezer Garcia. Garcia got Sean Shoffit to popup a bunt for the first out and after a walk, Patton bounced out to second base to leave runners on second and third with two away. Chris Hayes came in and got Metropoulos to bounce back to the mound to end the inning and then set down the Lugnuts in order in the ninth for his second save. Kniginyzky is now 4-0 at home for the year and is back atop the Midwest League with 56.1 innings pitched for the year.
Tonight's attendance was 2,108 for the make-up date of Community Basket Night. It was the second game of over 2,000 in attendance on the homestand with 2,494 on Wednesday for Honor Roll Day. This year's winner is Darwin Bunger of Burlington, who announced he will donate the Deery Brothers mini-van back to the Bees for a future fundraising project.
The Bees go back on the road tomorrow for eight games in nine days starting with the first of four against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Fox Cities Stadium tomorrow night at 6:35. RH David Henninger (1-2, 5.59) will start for the Bees against LH Jose Escalona (4-3, 3.48) for the Rattlers. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:15.
