(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans were defeated by the Toronto Marlies 3-1 in their first game back from the 2011 AHL All-Star break in front of more than 4,000 fans tonight at The Blue Cross Arena. With the loss, the Amerk drop to 21-24-3-1 after three straight wins before the break, while the Marlies improve to 24-20-0-7.

Simon Gysbers (0+2) picked up two assists and earned the second star of the game in tonight's contest for Toronto. Nazem Kadri (1+0), Matt Lashoff (1+0) and Fabian Brunnstrom (1+0) also contributed goals in the victory, while netminder Jonas Gustavsson, who earned top-star honors, picked up his first win of the season, blocking 24 of the Amerks 25 shots. The game was Gustavsson's first with the Marlies since being assigned to the AHL club from the Toronto Maple Leafs on a conditioning assignment.

Scoring the lone goal of the evening for Rochester was Bill Thomas (1+0). Clay Wilson's (0+1) assist only puts him eight points behind team point-leader Michal Repik and Mark Cullen (0+1) picked up his first point in an Amerks uniform after missing half the season with an injury. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom also stopped 30 of 33 shots in the losing effort.

Kadri put the Marlies on the board first with less than five minutes remaining in the opening period. Kadri whizzed around Rochester's defense and flipped the puck over Markstrom's left shoulder for his ninth of the year. Ryan Hamilton and Gysbers assisted on the play.

A little over a minute into the second stanza, the Marlies scored again to extend their lead to 2-0, this time on the power-play. Gysbers passed the puck to Lashoff, who sent a slap-shot sailing past Markstrom from the top of the point for his seventh goal of the season at 1:26 of the period. Also picking up his 24th assist of the season was Mike Zigomanis.

After almost 50 minutes of play, the Amerks' Bill Thomas finally found the back of the net in the third period. Wilson passed the puck to Thomas, who took the shot from the right face-off circle. As Gustavsson made initial contact with the puck, his own teammate, Lashoff, and Rochester's Triston Grant, collided at the goal-mouth, knocking the Toronto netminder off his feet. The impact of the collision somehow pushed the airborne puck past the right shoulder of Gustavsson and into the net moments before the net came dislodged. After a brief review of the play, referee Mark Lemelin awarded the goal to Rochester and Thomas was thus credited with his ninth of the year. Cullen also picked up his first point in his Amerks' debut with an assist.

The Marlies would then regain their two-goal lead with only minutes left to make the score 3-1. As Rochester defenseman Colby Robak tried to send the puck out of the Amerks' zone, Fabian Brunnstorm intercepted it and sent a wrister past Markstrom. The goal was unassisted.

The Amerks remain at home on Wednesday, February 9th as the Abbotsford Heat make their second and final appearance this season at The Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. North Division contest will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The game will also be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsNet Channel 26.
