Providence Bruins News Release
Worcester, MA - The Providence Bruins fell to the Worcester Sharks 2-0 Saturday night at the DCU Center. Providence is back in action at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday at 7:05 p.m. for Reds T-Shirt Night against the Hershey Bears.
While neither team was able to score during the opening period, it was highlighted by several saves from rookie net-minder Matt Dalton who stopped all 11 Worcester shots he faced, and eleven minutes into the frame, Joe Colborne dropped the gloves for his first career fighting major. Providence got quality scoring chances from Colby Cohen, Brian McGrattan, Jordan Smotherman and Kirk MacDonald, but was unable to score as the game went into the first intermission scoreless.
A minute and a half into the second period, Nathan McIver and Brandon Mashinter dropped the gloves in the second fight of the game. The Sharks took a 1-0 lead at the 16:09 mark of the second period. Defenseman Joe Loprieno beat Dalton glove-side tipping in a shot by Justin Braun from the right point. Frazer McLaren picked up the second assist. Providence went to the locker-room trailing by one after two periods.
The final period saw more quality scoring chances from Providence, however the P-Bruins failed to find the net. Following several opportunities on a delayed penalty 8 minutes into the third period, Providence was unable to score on their only power play of the final period. Providence's strongest scoring chance came on a breakaway opportunity from Maxime Sauve whose shot went just wide of Worcester net minder Carter Hutton's outreached glove. After Dalton skated to the bench for the extra attacker in the final minute, Worcester defenseman Nick Schaus intercepted the puck in the neutral zone to set up Mashinter's empty net goal at the 19:05 mark of the final period. Dan DaSilva recorded the second assist as the Sharks went on to the 2-0 victory.
Dalton stopped 27 of 28 shots for the P-Bruins, while Hutton made 20 saves for the Sharks. The P-Bruins were 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
