Allen, Texas - The Allen Americans hosted the top team in the league, the Missouri Mavericks, for a midweek affair. The Americans knocked the Mavericks off their throne tonight, winning 4-2.
The opening frame for the division rivals was a heated one. A Spencer Asuchak tripping call led to the first injury of the game, as Jesse Root had to be helped off the ice. The Mavericks would open the scoring on the subsequent Power Play on a strong individual effort from Darian Dziurzynski, netting his 17th of the season. Later in the period, CJ Ludwig was kicked out of the game on a major clipping penalty. That penalty resulted in Allen defenseman Aaron Gens being helped off the ice with an injury of his own.
Allen was able to tie things, 1-1, on a Power Play goal from Casey Pierro-Zabotel, who cashed in for his 13th of the season. However, the glory was short lived as Dziurzynski was able to reclaim the lead for Missouri, a mere 46 seconds later. It took an unlikely contributor, offensively that is, to once again pull even for the Americans before the end of the second period. Defenseman Mike Gunn scored his 3rd goal of the year to give us a 2-2 score at the end of 40 minutes.
Spencer Asuchak was able to give the Americans the lead on a nice wrist shot from the slot. His 2nd goal of the season made it 3-2 Allen, and they would never look back from there. Chad Costello would net his 22nd goal of the year in an empty net to put the icing on the cake.
The Americans continue their five-game home stand this Saturday night, the 12th, at 7:05 pm when the Wichita Thunder come to the Allen Event Center.
