Quad City Mallards News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Zach Pochiro snapped a 4-4 tie at 13:23 of the third period and the Quad City Mallards (27-24-6) went on to claim a wild 5-4 victory over the host Evansville IceMen (22-27-8) Wednesday night.
Pochiro, who also had an assist, produced what was the Mallards' second tie breaker of the third period on a breakaway. The Mallards were shorthanded when Matt Carey, who, like Pochiro, also picked up an assist, converted a penalty shot give the Mallards a 4-3 lead at 8:31 of the third. That advantage lasted only until Evansville's Troy Rutkowski buried Alex Wideman's centering feed at 11:42 of the third, but it was less than two minutes after that that Pochiro struck.
The IceMen had battled back from a 3-1 deficit knot the contest in the second period. Vladimir Nikiforov batted in the third Mallard goal at 6:54 of the second on the power play but Evansville replied with Mike Duco's power play tip-in at 11:28 and Nathan Moon's backhander from the slot at 16:59.
It was the Mallards who had to come from behind in the opening period. After Evansville's Matthew Zay opened the scoring by redirecting Chris Rumble's centering pass home 6:08 into the game, the Mallards responded with back-to-back first period goals of their own. Olivier Archambault swooped in on goal off the right wing to square the game at one apiece at 9:02 of the first. At 17:24 Matt Neal's breakaway goal gave the Mallards their first lead.
The Mallards activated forward Tanner Eberle from injured reserve earlier Wednesday.
The Mallards return to action on the road Friday night against the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Mallards next play at home Sunday, March 20 at 4:05 p.m. against the Indy Fuel. The first 1,000 fans ages 12 and under through the doors for the March 20 game will receive free Mallards youth replica jerseys courtesy of WQAD News 8.
