Americans Edge the Aeros 3-2 in a Shootout

Houston, TX - The Houston Aeros (33-22-4-5, 75 points) were defeated by the Rochester Americans (34-25-3-1, 72 points) 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night in front of 9,388 fans at Toyota Center. Rochester's Alex Biega ended the five-round shootout by scoring on the fifth and final Americans' attempt, giving his team the extra point on the road. Rochester goalie David Leggio (33-20-1) stopped 38 of 40 Aeros shots in regulation and three of five attempts in the shootout win. Houston goalie Cody Reichard (1-0-1) stopped 27 of 29 in regulation and two of five attempts in the shootout defeat. Houston forwards Chad Rau and Dan DaSilva each scored regulation goals in the defeat. Americans Colin Jacobs and Nick Tarnasky each scored regulation goals in the win. The Aeros hosts Texas on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Toyota Center.

Houston opened the scoring at 11:26 of the first period, taking a 1-0 lead with help from Chad Rau. Carson McMillan found Rau in the left-wing circle. The Aeros centerman snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of David Leggio for his tenth goal of the season.

Rochester evened the score 1-1 at 8:06 of the second period. Matt Ellis won the faceoff to Colin Jacobs, who beat goalie Cody Reichard for Rochester's first goal of the night. Houston used its power play to regain the lead at 2-1. Center Zack Phillips picked up a rebound in the Rochester zone and fired the puck past Leggio. Phillips' sixth goal of the season was assisted by defenseman Marco Scandella and center Mikael Granlund at 15:56. The Americans responded prior to the end of the middle period, tying the game 2-2. Nick Tarnasky scored his 14th goal of the season off a rebound in the Houston crease. Defenseman Adam Pardy and Alex Biega each had an assist on the play.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the two teams went to a shootout to decide the winner. Rochester's Rick Schofield, Mark Mancari and Biega each scored in the shootout. Houston forwards Justin Fontaine and Mikael Granlund each picked up a shootout goal.

Houston continues a ten-game home stand at Toyota Center on Tuesday, Mar. 26 against Texas at 7:05 p.m. The Grand Rapids Griffins visit Houston at 7:05 p.m. on Friday Mar. 29. Friday is "Go Green" Night, powered by a Cell Phone drive. As part of going "Green", fans are asked to bring in old cell phones for a Cell Phone Drive. The Aeros will award two tickets for a select future home game for each phone donation (up to ten per person). Grand Rapids will return to Toyota Center on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 7:05 p.m.
