Alex Schoenborn scored the coveted Teddy Bear goal, but the Portland Winterhawks (15-15-0-0) fell 3-2 to the Prince George Cougars (19-10-1-1) Saturday in front of 10,095 fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in the annual Les Schwab Teddy Bear Toss.

This year's Teddy Bear Toss collected 10,856 stuffed animals, which will be donated to children's charities and hospitals during the holiday season.

After a scoreless first period with a nearly sold out crowd anxiously awaiting the big moment, Schoenborn ended the suspense 3:27 into the second period when he scored on a power play to bring the teddy bears cascading onto the ice. Making the goal extra special for Schoenborn was the fact the goal came on his 20th birthday.

After the delay to clean up the bears, Prince George evened the game at 10:02 on a power play goal by Colby McAuley to make it 1-1, then took a 2-1 lead at 13:28 on a goal by Bartek Bison.

It remained 2-1 until 3:14 of the third when Rihards Bukarts scored to even the game at 2-2, extending his goal streak to three games and point streak to seven contests. Prince George took a 3-2 lead at 13:53 of the third on a power play goal by Brad Morrison, and survived a furious Hawks rally to get away with the one-goal win.

Adin Hill made 39 saves on 42 shots in the defeat, while Cougars netminder Nick McBride stopped 25 of 27 Portland shots.

Winterhawks defenseman Jack Dougherty picked up the assist on Schoenborn's Teddy Bear goal, extending his point streak to seven games. He has a point in every game in December, for a total of eight during the month.

Tonight's game was the team's last home game before the league's holiday break. The Hawks will play three road games next week, beginning Tuesday in Tri-Cities before heading to Spokane Friday and Saturday.
