Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

With his team needing a quality start, right-hander Nic Ungs delivered, allowing one run on two hits through five innings to send the Albuquerque Isotopes (11-12) to a 7-4 win over the Round Rock Express (11-13) Sunday afternoon at The Dell Diamond. The triumph is the ‘Topes' third in a row, their longest winning streak of the season, and gives them a 3-1 series win over the Express in their home ballpark for the first time ever.

Ungs (1-1), a starter turned long reliever turned spot starter, was on his game from the outset, retiring the first six batters he faced before surrendering a walk to Round Rock catcher Danny Ardoin to start the third. After a sacrifice moved Ardoin to second, Josh Anderson roped an RBI double to cash him in, marking the only run, and only hard hit ball, Ungs allowed all afternoon. The right-hander issued the one walk while striking out four in an efficient 71 pitch afternoon en route to his first victory of the 2007 season.

While their pitcher performed well on the mound, the Isotopes hitters were quick to pick him up, plating three in the top of the second on a three-run homer by Chris Ashby to grab an early 3-0 lead.

After the Express plated their run in the third, Albuquerque extended its advantage in the sixth when Round Rock starter Juan Gutierrez served up a towering one-out double to Scott Seabol before walking Todd Sears and Ashby to load the bases. Gutierrez (1-2), who was saddled with the loss, then gave way to reliever Miguel Asencio, who wasn't able to escape unscathed as Josh Labandeira delivered an RBI force-out at second to make the score 4-1. Pinch-hitter Valentino Pascucci then followed with an RBI single to third, scoring Sears and giving the ‘Topes a 5-1 lead.

Albuquerque would score once more in the seventh on an RBI single by Chad Hermansen, before Round Rock mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three times to cut the Isotopes lead to a tenuous 6-4.

The top three hitters in the Isotopes order, Robert Andino, Reggie Abercrombie, and Hermansen each collected two hits apiece as Albuquerque banged out 13 hits, the third straight game the ‘Topes have reached double-digits in knocks.

The ‘Topes would add one more insurance run in the eighth on yet another RBI single by Hermansen, and the bullpen righted itself to seal the victory. Newest closer Justin Miller (2) finished things off in the ninth, allowing one walk and striking out two to grab his second save in three days.

Albuquerque will now head north to take on another division rival in the Oklahoma RedHawks at Bricktown Ballpark. Lefty Paul Mildren (1-2, 6.11) makes the start for the ‘Topes against RedHawks righty Josh Rupe (1-1, 4.24) with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM Mountain Time.
