Ankiel Leads Birds To Victory

Rick Ankiel was the catalyst driving in four runs with a pair of extra base hits in the game. In the fourth inning his double to right field drove in a run before Travis Hanson's two-RBI double gave Memphis a 3-1 advantage. Ankiel delivered again in the fifth inning with the bases loaded. His triple down the right field line cleared the bases and put the ‘Birds up 6-1. He finished the day with four RBI and a pair of hits. Brendan Ryan and Travis Hanson each had two hits with Hanson driving in a season-best two runs. Both Ryan Ludwick and Edgar Gonzalez extended their hit streaks with singles. Ludwick's streak now stands at 13 games while Gonzalez has reached base in 22 straight games and has hit in 12 straight.

Iowa catcher Geovany Soto led the Cubs with five hits, including two doubles and two RBI. Carlos Rojas and Chris Walker each chipped in two hits in a losing effort.

Memphis starter Chris Narveson picked up his third win of the year after pitching six solid innings. He allowed five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Former Redbird Les Walrond took the loss for the Cubs after allowing eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits in 5.1 innings. Brian Falkenborg nailed down his league-best seventh save with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Redbirds went 7-1 during the homestand and are now 12-4 at AutoZone Park this season.

The ‘Birds will play at Omaha tomorrow night. Memphis will start Mike Parisi against the Royals right-hander Luke Hudson. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
