Abbotsford Heat News Release
Houston, TX - The Houston Aeros battled back from a two-goal third period deficit and then beat the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in a shootout, 5-4 on Friday night at the Toyota Center. Even had the Knights won the game, their playoff hopes had been dashed earlier when the Iowa Stars beat the Peoria Rivermen in a shootout, 4-3.
The Knights grabbed the early lead when they were given a powerplay two minutes into the game. Just 15 seconds into the powerplay, Carsen Germyn hit Brandon Prust with a pass behind the Aeros' defense. Prust roared in and beat goalie Josh Harding with a wrist shot for his eleventh goal of the year.
The Aeros tied the game on their own powerplay early in the second period. Matt Foy converted the rebound of a shot by Greg Mauldin at 3:55.
The Knights had four consecutive penalty kills in the second but found some offense on the third. Aeros' defenseman Scott Ferguson collided with Foy right in front of his own net. Warren Peters scooped up the loose puck and beat Harding for his team-leading third shorthanded goal.
The Aeros turned the tables during a Knights' powerplay in the last minute of the period. Joel Ward stole the puck from Germyn and beat Brent Krahn on a shorthanded breakaway to make it 2-2 after two.
The third period proved to be a wild one. The Knights grabbed the lead back when they were awarded a five-on-three powerplay. Germyn laced a slap shot past Harding to make it 3-2. Just 15 seconds later, Peters tipped in a shot by Ajay Baines to make it 4-2.
But later in the period with the two teams skating four on four, the Aeros got goals 43 seconds apart from Ward and Foy to make it 4-4.
In the shootout, Roman Voloshenko scored the second of his two shootout goals in the eighth round, allowing Houston to earn the extra point. Adam Cracknell had the Knights' shootout goal. Seven of the ten meetings between the two teams were decided by one goal. Four were decided in a shootout and two more were settled in overtime.
The Knights are now 34-30-3-11. They head now to San Antonio where they'll face the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Both games can be heard on 1420 KOTK and on the internet at omahaaksarbenknights.com. The game can be seen on-line using the link to B2 Networks on the Knights' home page.
