Phantoms End Season With Spirited Tilt vs. Penguins
April 15, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The Philadelphia Phantoms drew the curtain on their tenth season in the American Hockey League with the type of game that has defined their legacy over the past decade. Unfortunately, they came out on the wrong end of a 4-3 count against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Brent Kelly registered a hat trick, tying the game with his third goal of the night with just 18 seconds left in regulation.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took an early 1-0 lead just 2:55 into the game when Stephen Dixon jammed home a loose puck past Phantoms goaltender Rejean Beauchemin. But the Phantoms tied matters at the 7:04 mark when Kelly beat Penguins goaltender Dany Sabourin for his first of the evening from David Printz and Stefan Ruzicka.
The Penguins took the game's next two goals and held a 3-1 lead at the first intermission. Daniel Carcillo picked up a shorthanded goal at 9:23, carrying the puck down the right boards before cutting in front and beating Beauchemin. Then at 11:12, Jonathan Filewich stood at the top of the crease and deflected a shot issued by Guillaume Lefebvre from the center point.
Philadelphia began chipping into that advantage at 8:39 of the second period when Kelly scored his second of the game off assists from Ruzicka and Pat Kavanagh. Then, with the season's final seconds ticking away, the Phantoms bought themselves some extra time. Marc Cavosie fired a shot through a screen that fell to Sabourin's right, where Kelly knocked it home to force overtime.
The extra sesson ended the wrong way, however, when Kristofer Kolanos snapped home the game-winner from the right circle at the 3:04 mark.
Philadelphia outshot the Baby Pens 41-20 on the night. Ruzicka and Kelly were each +3, while Kavanagh was +2. The game also featured various encounters consistent with the Penguins-Phantoms rivalry as the teams combined for 136 penalty minutes, just ten short of Philadelphia's season high. Ben Eager did set an individual Phantoms season high with 32 penalty minutes, including two of the evening's four fights. Triston Grant represented the Phantoms in the other two affairs.
The Phantoms finish their 10th season in the American Hockey League with a record of 34-37-2-7 for 77 points, putting them in sixth place in the East Division. Given the 80-game season length in the AHL, the season finale was the 800th game in team history.
Fans can continue to check out the team's website at www.phantomshockey.com throughout the coming weeks and months for coverage of the Calder Cup Playoffs, as well as the Flyers progress in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and updates on the Phantoms players involved in the Flyers postseason. The Phantoms will also continue their memorabilia auctions in The Phantoms Attic, the team's online store on the Ebay auction site, during the offseason.
Season ticket deposits for the 2006-07 season are now being accepted at the Phantoms ticket sales office. To place a deposit on a full season ticket or 10-game ticket plan, call the Phantoms at 215-465-4522.
