Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The R-Phils entered play on Saturday evening fresh off of a doubleheader sweep of the Aeros, and were looking to make it three in a row - Akron starter Kelvin De La Cruz, however, had other ideas.
De La Cruz (1-1, 1.64) tossed five no-hit innings, OF Tim Fedroff had three RBIs, and the Akron Aeros shutout the Reading Phillies 5-0 at Canal Park in Akron on Saturday evening.
A native of La Vega, Dominican Republic, De La Cruz, 21, was making just his second start of the season for the Aeros on Saturday night. After posting a 2-2 mark with a 2.91 ERA earlier this season for Kinston (A), De La Cruz, was promoted to Akron, and has really excelled on the mound. On Saturday, in game three, he fanned four batters over five hitless innings, en-route to his first Double-A win.
While De La Cruz was brilliant over five frames, R-Phils starter Drew Naylor (3-4, 4.57) allowed four runs on six hits over 5.1 innings to take the loss - his fourth of the season. Naylor, a native of Australia, snapped his personal two-game winning streak. A member of the Philadelphia 40-man roster, Naylor walked five and struck-out two.
The R-Phils (14-21) managed just two hits in the contest, a night after taking both games of a doubleheader against the Aeros. It was the fifth time this season that the R-Phils had been shutout, and the loss marked their eighth loss in the month of May (6-8).
On Sunday, in the finale of their four-game set from Akron, the R-Phils will send righty Vance Worley (1-2, 4.66) to the hill, as he makes his eighth start of the season. Worley, 22, was solid over his last start against New Hampshire on May 11 in Reading. The Sacramento, CA native allowed just two runs on six hits over seven solid innings - but did not factor in the decision.
Taking the hill for the Aeros in the finale on Sunday, will be LHP Scott Barnes (0-4, 7.20). Barnes, a product of St. John's University, will look for his first win of the 2010 season after dropping four of his seven starts. In three May starts, Barnes has posted an 0-2 mark with a 5.52 ERA.
Join Brian Seltzer, who will have the call beginning with the R-Phils pre-game show at 1:05 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1240 AM WIOV. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m.
