Havens Debuts with Three Hits, B-Mets Drop 6-2 Decision

Second baseman Reese Havens made his Double-A debut and shined with a three-hit night, however that proved to be the bright spot as Binghamton fell 6-2 to Trenton Saturday night at Waterfront Park. Havens roped two singles and a double and scored the game's first run. The loss is the fifth straight for the B-Mets.

Binghamton (19-17) took the lead on the Thunder in the third inning. With one out, Havens doubled down the line in right to move into scoring position. Evans, jammed by a D.J. Mitchell fastball, floated a liner along the right-field line that fell in fair play for an RBI double, plating Havens to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

Trenton (20-15) wasted no time answering in the bottom of the frame off starter Brad Holt. Austin Krum singled with one out and was driven home when David Adams smashed a triple off the wall in left-center to tie the score. The next hitter, Austin Romine, plated Adams with a groundout to short. Now with a 2-1 lead, the Thunder would not look back.

Holt ran into a wall in the fifth inning, allowing the first four men he faced to reach. Luis Nunez singled to open the frame. A passed ball moved him to second where he scored from when Justin Christian lined a Holt curveball into right, making it 3-1 Trenton. The young righty proceeded to give up another hit to Krum and walked Adams to load the bases, forcing his exit after four-plus innings.

Josh Stinson came out of the bullpen in relief and promptly permitted a two-run double to Romine and a sacrifice fly to Brandon Laird, allowing all three runners he inherited to score, upping the Thunder's lead to 6-1. Holt was charged with six earned runs on seven hits and took the loss, his third.

Stinson would go on to toss the remainder of the game in scoreless fashion, but the damage had already been done. He allowed just three hits over four, shutout innings to lower his ERA to 3.24 for the season.

The B-Mets final scoring chance came in the sixth when Mitchell departed. The Thunder starter gave up one-out hits to Zach Lutz and Carlos Guzman before leaving the game. Cory Arbiso followed and gave up a hit to Mike Nickeas to load the bases. After striking out Brahiam Maldonado for the second out, he walked Jonathan Malo to force a run home, cutting the deficit to four. However, Trenton manager Tony Franklin went to lefty Wilkins Arias with Kirk Nieuwenhuis representing the tying run and Arias struck out Nieuwenhuis to leave the bases packed.

Mitchell notched the win with 5 1/3 innings of two-run work. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out four to improve to 4-2 on the year.

The bullpen took it the remainder of the way for Trenton. Four Thunder relievers limited Binghamton to just two hits in the final 3 2/3 innings to seal the win. Trenton's bullpen has now fired 11 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings in the series.

The B-Mets look to salvage the series Sunday afternoon at 1:05 in the finale of the four-game set. RHP Scott Shaw (4-1, 8.02) goes for Binghamton and the Thunder will counter with LHP Jeremy Bleich (2-2, 3.96).
