Double the Fun...The Aeros and Erie SeaWolves split a doubleheader yesterday afternoon in Erie, with Akron taking the conclusion of game one 4-3 before the SeaWolves collected a 6-5 win in 11 innings in game two. Play resumed in game one in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 2-2 tie, and Erie struck next with a run in the seventh against Aeros reliever Zach Putnam. Akron battled back in the top of the ninth, as SS Carlos Rivero tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run, and CF Mickey Hall scored the winning run all the way from first thanks to a single by 2B Kyle Haines and an error by Casper Wells. The comeback marked just the second time the Aeros had won when trailing after eight innings. Akron squandered a three-run lead and a two-run lead in game two as the contest stretched into extra innings. SeaWolves slugger Brennan Boesch finally accounted for the difference, driving his 20th home run of the season out to left-center with one away in the bottom of the 11th to give Erie the win.
You Stay Classy, San Diego...RF John Drennen continued his recent tear with a pair of multi-hit games in the completed doubleheader yesterday. He batted .438 (7-16) in the series against Erie and now has an eight-game hitting streak, one back of the team high he shares with Beau Mills Since returning to the Aeros June 1st from a brief stint in Class A Kinston, the native of San Diego, CA is batting .327 with 18 runs scored, 14 doubles, two home runs and 21 RBI in 44 games in the last two months, boosting his average to .286 for the season and climbing within three points of Jose Constanza's team-leading .289 mark.
The Mickey Hall Club...Another recently returned outfielder had a monster series against the SeaWolves, as Hall slammed his first two home runs of the season in the last two games. His first was a solo shot to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead Wednesday night, and his two-run homer in the second inning of game two paced a big frame for Akron. The 24-year-old native of Marietta, GA is now batting .233 in 31 games for Akron and came back to the team July 12th after a two-month stint with the Class AAA Columbus Clippers. He was acquired as a player-to-be-named-later from Boston in the Paul Byrd trade last season.
Judge Judy...With closer Vinnie Pestano on the disabled list with right elbow soreness, RHP Josh Judy has stepped seamlessly into the part-time closer role. He earned the save in style in game one yesterday, striking out the side to snap Akron's nine-game losing streak to Erie. Judy has now worked five straight scoreless outings dating back to July 4th, and in those nine innings has allowed just one unearned run and four hits, walking none and striking out an other-worldly 18 batters.
Goodbye Erie...The second-place SeaWolves have now taken 10 of their last 11 contests with Akron, and own a 12-3 record against the Aeros on the season. Akron has been tremendous against all other teams (57-27 record, .679 winning percentage) and begin a three-game series with last-place Altoona tonight for Fireworks Friday sponsored by Donatos.
