July 24, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Mark Kiger brought in two with a single in the seventh inning, but the SeaWolves were the story thanks to a season-high seven homers Friday night at Jerry Uht Park in a 16-3 drubbing of the visiting B-Mets. Eric Brown allowed a season-worst nine runs in two innings to lose his eighth straight start.
With a 15-0 deficit entering the seventh inning, Binghamton (38-60) struck for three runs off starter Thad Weber. Ike Davis led off the frame with his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot to right-center getting the B-Mets on the board. Caleb Stewart followed with a single and D.J. Wabick moved him up to third with his second double of the contest. Kiger drove in both men with a line-drive single to right, bringing the score to 15-3.
Erie (56-43) added its final run in the eighth inning putting the finishing touches on the rout. Alex Avila hit his third homer of the game to straightaway center off reliever Roy Merritt. He had previously mashed three-run shots in the first and second innings, respectively. Avila ended the day 3-5 with three homers and seven RBIs, both career highs.
The SeaWolves also got homers from Casper Wells, Michael Bertram, Ron Bourquin and Brennan Boesch. Boesch went 4-5 with two doubles, a homer and three RBIs.
Weber picked up his second straight win over Binghamton with 7.2 innings of three-run work with a season-high seven strikeouts.
Brown was tagged for nine runs in two innings and allowed a season-high three homers in the loss.
Binghamton will look to even the series in the middle game of the three-game set Saturday evening. The B-Mets will throw RHP Jake Ruckle (1-1, 4.64) at Erie, which will counter with RHP Luis Marte (5-8, 3.92). The first pitch is slated for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
