Aerodynamics...

Best in the World...

The Aeros fell to Bowie 3-1 last night, snapping a three-game winning streak. It was the fourth winning streak of at least three games this season for the team and Akron's 22-6 (.786) record remains the best in professional baseball. Yankees affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA - International League) remains in second place with a 23-8 (.748) mark, while the Birmingham Barons (AA - Southern League) in the White Sox organization are third at 21-8 (.724).

Bowie Bad for Bats...

Although the Aeros are 8-3 against Bowie this season, the club is batting just .202 against Baysox pitching and has been held to three runs or less five times already, including two shutouts in the first seven games of the year. On the flip side, Akron is hitting .291 as a team in the other 17 games this year (all against Altoona and Harrisburg).

Chicks Dig the Small Ball...

Home runs are decreasing in professional baseball these days, but Akron's slugging futility in 2009 ranks towards the bottom of the Eastern League. Despite having the best record in professional baseball, the Aeros have only 15 home runs in 28 ball games, and their .373 slugging percentage is sixth in the league. The team also sits ninth in doubles, eighth in triples, last in total bases, and C Carlos Santana is the only qualified Aero to rank in the top-35 in the league in slugging. Additionally, the Aeros have yet to homer since Media Relations Intern Jacob Rosen started working May 4th. However, those numbers are augmented since Akron is fourth in the league in stolen bases, second in walks, and has struck out the least as a team.

Electric Edell...LHP Ryan Edell will be making his first start of 2009 tonight for Akron, taking the rotation spot of RHP Hector Rondon. Edell was received from Class AAA Columbus earlier today, and made 26 starts last season for the Aeros. In those starts, he collected a 7-8 record with a 3.80 ERA, and was second on the team with 99 strikeouts. Rondon was phenomenal in the early going this season, as the 21-year-old native of Guatire, VZ was 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA. He will now be working out of the bullpen, and coming into today is one of two EL pitchers with five wins and ranks third in ERA.

Big Mac Coming to Town...In another transaction earlier today, RF John Drennen was transferred to Class A Kinston and in return, red-hot RF Matt McBride was received from the K-Tribe. In 21 games with Akron this season, Drennen was hitting .191 with one home run and 10 RBI. McBride comes to Akron as one of the hottest hitters on the planet, leading all of minor league baseball with 51 hits and 36 RBI, while also ranking in the top-five in batting average (.405 - fourth), doubles (15 - second), extra-base hits (21 - tied for third), and total bases (84 - third). He is starting in right field tonight and will wear #36. His Carolina League-best 23-game hitting streak ended Sunday, although his 24-game on-base streak remains intact.
