AKRON, OH - The Akron Aeros got a quality start from right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner and took the rubber match of a three-game series against the Altoona Curve 3-2 Wednesday at Canal Park.

Cory Burns gave up an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to make it a one-run game, but struck out the side for the third time this season with runners on first and second to record his Eastern League best fourth save of 2011.

Gardner pitched five three-hit innings giving up one earned run, working around four walks and striking out two to earn his second win of the season.

Jeff Locke got the loss for Altoona lasting 4.2 innings giving up two earned runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out six.

Jason Donald continued his rehab assignment with Akron going 2-4 with two infield singles.

The Aeros (4-3) got on the board in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Matt McBride and Kyle Bellows that made it 2-0.

The Curve (3-4) got a run back in the top of the fourth inning off Gardner on a Jeremy Farrell RBI single that made it 2-1.

That's the way it stood until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Aeros added an insurance run on a John Drennen solo home run to the Canal Park right field bleachers.

Nick Hagadone, Matt Langwell and Cory Burns made the lead stand up and the Aeros won their first series of the season.

Akron will begin a seven-game road trip at Reading on Thursday. The Aeros will send lefty Scott Barnes to the hill coming off a no decision in his first outing against Binghamton. He will face left-handed pitcher and former Aero Ryan Edell. Edell pitched for the Aeros in parts of 2008, 2009 and 2010. Thursday's first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Coverage begins on Fox Sports 1350 AM at 6:50 p.m.

The Aeros will return home on Thursday, April 21 as they will host Reading for the next Buck Up Thirsty Thursday Night at Canal Park, presented by the Ohio Lottery.
