Squirrels Can't Complete Sweep, Fall to Baysox, 4-1

RICHMOND, VA - The Bowie Baysox (2-4) pulled away late from the Richmond Flying Squirrels (4-3), claiming a, 4-1, victory in the finale of a three-game series in front of 6,039 at The Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.

Scoreless into the fourth inning, the Bowie Baysox cracked the run column first, picking up a lone run off of Squirrels' starter Daryl Maday. With two outs, Maday hit Robbie Widlansky. Maday then issued a walk to Ronnie Welty before Caleb Joseph knocked in the first run of the ballgame with a double up the third-base line.

Maday was still in the game in the sixth when he encountered Welty for the third time. Welty increased the Baysox lead to 2-0 by cracking his second home run of the season and the series. The solo-home run climbed just over the wall in left field.

Making a spot-start for the Baysox, right-hander Zach Clark (1-0) was impressive through five scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out two as he earned his first victory of the season.

Maday (0-1) departed to the loss after six innings. He pitched well in a losing effort, conceding just the two runs on seven hits. He walked one, hit another, and fanned six.

Right-hander Raul Rivero relieved Clark and worked a scoreless sixth inning. In the seventh however, he made a mistake up in the zone to Joe Koshansky and the resulting solo-blast to right-center field cut the Richmond deficit to a lone run, 2-1. It marked the first home run of the season for Koshansky and the second for the Squirrels during their season-opening home stand.

Richmond got no closer as Rivero settled back in to work a scoreless eighth inning. The Baysox iced their lone victory in the series with a pair of runs in the ninth. In an odd sequence, a hit batsman, a strikeout and ensuing passed ball and an RBI double from Carlos Rojas combined to cap the scoring. Both runs were charged to Otero, although only one was earned.

Hulking right-hander Jose Diaz entered in the ninth and mowed down the top third of the Richmond lineup in order to close out the Baysox victory. Diaz earned his third save of the season. Left-hander David Quinowski pitched well in relief for the Squirrels, working two scoreless innings through the seventh and eighth.

The Flying Squirrels open their first road series of the season at Blair County Ballpark against the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) at 6:30 PM on Thursday night. LHP Eric Surkamp (0-0, 0.00) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Aaron Thompson (1-0, 1.50) for the Curve.
