TODAY: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Bowie Baysox will meet in the finale of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels scored three runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 2-1 deficit and defeat the Baysox 7-2 in game two of the three-game series in front of 6,385 on Tuesday night at The Diamond.
TODAY'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in the series finale for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his 2011 debut 4/7 against New Britain...Allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings...Struck out two batters and walked one...All four runs and four of the seven hits he allowed came in the fourth inning...Five of the seven hits he allowed went for extra bases (all doubles)...Retired the leadoff batter in four of his five innings on the mound...Recorded six ground outs and five fly outs...Threw 64 pitches, 39 strikes...Threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 21 batters he faced... Won first seven decisions including six straight 4/15/10-5/12/10...Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week 4/26/10-5/2/10...Named an EL Mid-Season All-Star...Did not pitch in the game due to promotion...Promoted to Triple-A Fresno 7/3/10...Went 8-5 with a 2.34 ERA in 16 starts prior to promotion...Went 1-4 with a 9.21 ERA in seven games including five starts with Fresno...Sent back down to Richmond 8/4/10...Went 1-3 with a 9.68 ERA in nine games, two starts, after being sent down...Is 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA in eight career starts against New Britain...Allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings in his first start against the Rock Cats last season on 4/20/10 at The Diamond...Selected in the 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Arkansas.
Right-hander Zach Clark gets the nod in the series finale for the Baysox...Making the spot start in place of right-hander Chorye Spoone who was promoted to Triple-A Norfolk...Has spent parts of each of the last four seasons with Bowie...Went 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA in 14 games, two starts, with the Baysox in 2010...Was 2-7 with a 5.05 ERA (43ER/76.2 IP) in 15 starts in 2010...Appeared in one game against Richmond in 2010 and allowed two unearned runs on two hits in three innings while striking out one, walking one, and hitting one batter...Pitched at four levels in 2010 (Low-A - Triple-A) and went a combined 3-9 with a 4.29 ERA in 30 games including 15 starts...Struck out 74 batters and walked 28 in 115 1/3 innings in 2010...Opponents hit .290 against him...Pitched at four different levels in 2008 and 2009...Made a career-high 32 appearances and 19 starts in 2008 in time spent between Low-A Delmarva, Advanced-A Frederick, Bowie, and Triple-A Norfolk...Signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a non-drafted free agent in May 26, 2009...Attended the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
SWEEP OF THE SOX?: The Flying Squirrels will go out in search of their first sweep of the season in this morning's series finale...Richmond swept four three-game series a season ago including a three-game series sweep of Bowie at The Diamond 4/30-5/2.
BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN: Left-hander Thomas Vessella picked up the win in last night's contest after allowing just two runs on two hits in six innings against the Baysox...It was the 25-year-old's first win since 5/31/08 against Kannapolis while with the Lexington Legends when he allowed one run on three hits in seven innings...It was just the fifth win for Vessella in 73 games, 31 starts, in time between affiliated and independent minor leagues.
ROOKIES IN THE ROTATION: A quartet of starters made their Double-A debuts for the Flying Squirrels during the first week of the season...Left-handers Eric Surkamp, Ryan Verdugo, and Thomas Vessella and right-hander Justin Fitzgerald combined to go 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA (4ER/20.0 IP)in their four starts, striking out 20 batters and walking five...Opponents hit just .169 (11-for-65) against the four in their first trips to the mound in 2011.
FRIENDS TURNED FOES: Several members of the Flying Squirrels and Baysox were teammates with the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League this past fall...Richmond second baseman Charlie Culberson, left-hander Ryan Verdugo, and right-hander Jason Stoffel were teamed with Bowie infielder Greg Miclat, catcher Caleb Joseph, and right-hander Wynn Pelzer on a Scorpions club that won the AFL championship...The Scottsdale club was comprised of prospects from the Giants, Orioles, Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies organizations.
RIVALRY RENEWED: The current three-game series marks the first meeting of the season between the Flying Squirrels and Baysox in 2011...Richmond will play Bowie 25 times this season, more than any other Eastern League opponent...The two teams met 29 times in 2010 with the Flying Squirrels taking 16 of the 29 meetings including the final three to eliminate the Baysox from playoff contention...Richmond went 9-6 against Bowie at The Diamond.
PROSPECTING THE SQUIRRELS: Eight members of the Flying Squirrels 2011 roster are ranked in the top-30 prospects in the San Francisco Giants farm system according to Baseball America...The group includes infielder Charlie Culberson (#8), left-hander Eric Surkamp (#9), outfielder Roger Kieschnick (#14), right-hander Jason Stoffel (#22), outfielder Juan Perez (#24), left-hander Ryan Verdugo (#25), catcher Johnny Monell (#28), and left-hander Clayton Tanner (#30).
FAMILIAR FACES: Seven members of the Flying Squirrels inaugural 2010 squad return to Richmond to start the 2011 season...Right-handers Daryl Maday and Ronnie Ray, left-handers Clayton Tanner and David Quinowski, catcher Aaron Lowenstein, and infielder Sharlon Schoop all spent time with the Flying Squirrels in 2010...Tanner and Ray spent the entire season in Richmond....Tanner and Maday were both named Eastern League All-Stars; however, neither were available to pitch in the game.
