Akron RubberDucks News Release
Aerodynamics...
Lucky Sevens...The Aeros used a monster sixth inning to defeat the second-place Erie SeaWolves 8-1 yesterday, earning a split in the four-game wraparound series at Canal Park. The seven runs in the bottom of the 6th were the most in any inning for Akron this season, bettering a six-run explosion against Bowie on Opening Night. The Aeros smacked a pair of ground-rule doubles on fan interference in the frame, took advantage of two errors and two walks, and then got back-to-back two-run singles from CF Jose Constanza and SS Carlos Rivero to break the game open and improve to 14-3 in day games. Memorable Monday...Akron claimed its 31st win of the year yesterday before a season-high 9,118 fans at Canal Park, the sixth-largest attendance in team history. The Aeros maintained the best record in professional baseball while also extending their lead over Erie to 6.5 games in the Southern Division. Akron ripped three doubles on the afternoon and got a solo home run from C Carlos Santana (his team-leading seventh of the year), while on the base paths Constanza swiped his league-leading 17th bag of the year. The offense also finished 4-13 with runners in scoring position one day after going 0-7 in that category and the defense turned three double plays, including a pair off line drives.
Prince of Piscataway...Despite the fact that the Aeros won by seven runs yesterday, RHP Carlton Smith still earned his first save of the season in relief of starter Hector Rondon. The native of Piscataway, NJ allowed only two hits while striking out one to preserve the Akron victory and earn the old-fashioned three-inning save. In his last six appearances Smith has allowed only two earned runs over 16.1 innings (1.10 ERA) while permitting 11 hits, three walks and striking out seven while lowering his ERA from 4.32 to 2.19, the second-best for any Aeros reliever (Scott Roehl, 1.64 ERA).
Let's Go Streaking...CF Jose Constanza went 1-5 with a run scored and two RBI yesterday, extending his hitting streak to a team-high seven games. This is the second seven-game run for Constanza this year (he hit in seven straight from April 29th to May 8th), and he has now reached base in 31 of his 37 games played this season. 3B Niuman Romero snapped out of a recent funk yesterday with a pair of singles, a walk and a run scored as Akron improved to 12-1 when he starts at third this season. The native of Barcelona, VZ entered play yesterday mired in an 11-for-66 slump (.167) over his past 22 games.
Gomez Returns to Mound...After hurling the first perfect game in Aeros history in his last start Thursday at Trenton, 21-year-old Jeanmar Gomez takes the mound tonight to open this series with Reading. Gomez, who began the year with Class A Kinston, currently ranks second in Minor League Baseball with a .147 batting average against, is tied for the organization lead with six wins, and is second in the Cleveland minor league system in both ERA (1.36) and strikeouts (41).
