Adam Calderone Delivers RBI Triple Off John Smoltz

Manchester, NH---Adam Calderone ripped an RBI triple off John Smoltz in the bottom of the third inning, but the Fisher Cats fell to Portland 5-1 in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night in Manchester.

A franchise-record crowd of 8,903 took in the game, which featured a rehabilitation start by the Red Sox pitcher. Smoltz worked 3.1 innings (60 pitches), allowing three hits and one run. He did not walk any batters and struck out two. It was his second rehab start and first for the Sea Dogs.

Portland (22-22) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning against starting and losing pitcher Randy Boone (3-2). Aaron Bates (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) was hit-by-pitch and moved to third on a single and error by Jorge Jimenez (2-for-4, R). Bates scored on an infield single by Ryan Kalish (2-for-4, RBI) and when Brad Emaus threw the ball away, Jimenez scored to make it 2-0. Ryan Khoury delivered an RBI double scoring Kalish with the third Sea Dogs run.

New Hampshire (23-23) scored its lone run after two were out in the bottom of the third inning. Todd Donovan (2-for-5) singled and Calderone drove him home with a triple.

Winning pitcher Jarod Plummer (3-1) worked 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of Smoltz. He allowed three hits, two walks and struck out two. Dustin Richardson finished up with two scoreless innings for the Sea Dogs.

Portland tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Lars Anderson was hit-by-a pitch and Bates homered off reliever Adrian Martin to extend the Sea Dogs lead to 5-1.
