Chesapeake Baysox News Release
HARRISBURG, Penn. - Designated hitter Joe Nowicki hit his fifth home run of the season and the Baysox bullpen did not allow a run over the final four innings as they defeated Harrisburg 3-2 on Monday. Starter Sean Gleason allowed two early runs but was able to settle down on the way to earning his second win of the season.
The Baysox got on the board in the first inning against Senators starter Erik Arnesen. Left fielder Jonathan Tucker singled with one out and advanced to third on a single by first baseman Brandon Snyder. Third baseman Michael Costanzo grounded one back to Arnesen, but Tucker was able to score putting the Baysox up 1-0.
The offense looked to add on in the second as second baseman Miguel Abreu led off the inning with a double to left. Nowicki followed with a two-run blast to right field, extending the Baysox lead to three and giving him his 12th RBI of the season. The Baysox would look to add another run later in the inning as center fielder Dave Krynzel walked and stole second to put another runner in scoring position with two outs. Tucker followed with a single but Senators left fielder Leonard Davis fired a strike to the plate to nail Krynzel and keep the lead at three.
Back came Harrisburg in the bottom of the inning, as Joel Guzman led off the inning with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to left field off Gleason to make the score 3-1. They would add another run in the third inning as Michael Daniel tripled and scored on a single by Ofilio Castro. Gleason would settle down from there, keeping the one-run lead in tact before giving way to left-hander Chad Thall in the sixth.
Harrisburg put runners at the corners with one out against Thall in the sixth, but the Baysox southpaw was able to strikeout Bill Rhinehart before getting Michael Martinez to ground out to end the threat. Thall worked a scoreless seventh inning before giving way to left-hander Wilfrido Perez who held down the Senators in the eighth
Right-hander Josh Perrault came on for the ninth and walked Daniel with one out. Daniel advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Freddie Bynum. With the tying run on second, Perrault regained his focus to strike out Jhonatan Solano before getting Davis to fly out to right field to end the game. The save was Perrault's fifth of the season and lowered his ERA to 1.82 in 18 games on the season. He has combined with Perez to save twelve of the Baysox 22 wins on the season, while the two have held hitters to a paltry .154 average in 43.3 innings on the season.
With the win the Baysox move to 22-20 on the season, 9.0 games behind division leader Akron in the Eastern League Southern Division. They will travel to Altoona to begin a three-game set with the Curve starting tomorrow. RHP John Mariotti (0-2, 6.46 ERA) takes the hill for the Baysox against Curve RHP Brad Lincoln (1-3, 2.31 ERA) Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
