Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, PA - It took three years and 353 days, but the Norfolk Admirals finally found a way to grab a regular season win in Wilkes-Barre.

Bracken Kearns, Paul Szczechura and Norm Milley recorded a goal and an assist each as the Admirals posted a 4-3 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday afternoon at the Wachovia Arena. The victory put an end to a 17-game regular season home winning streak against the Admirals, and saw the Pens record dip to 27-17-0-2 on the season. Norfolk upped its record to 15-27-2-4.

Milley and Kearns put the visitors up 2-0 midway through the game, before the Pens battled back with two quick strikes by Tim Brent and Chris Minard just 1:11 apart in the third period to tie the score.

"We found some energy starting the third period and got ourselves back into the game," said head coach Todd Richards. "And then, the first shift after their timeout was a bad shift for us. We take a penalty, there goes all the momentum we created, because we have to penalty kill. And then, we take an unsportsmanlike conduct that gives them a five on three."

Mark Letestu was whistled for a hooking call at 4:05 to give the Admirals the man advantage, and Alex Goligoski was shown the penalty box for taking exception to a non-call when he was roughed up in the far corner. Then, 28 seconds into the two-man advantage Szvzechura beat goaltender David Brown for his eight tally of the year to put the visitors back in front.

"We battled so hard to get back into the game," Richards lamented. "We lost our composure, and it cost us the game."

Radek Smolenak gave the Admirals a two-goal lead with an easy power play tap in off a Szvzechura rebound at 12:15.

The Penguins were handed a power play late for a Vladimir Mihalik hook, and responded with a Mark Ardelan goal with Brown out of the net to pull the home club within one goal with 57 seconds to play. But lightning didn't strike twice despite sustained play with the extra attacker in the waning seconds of the game, and the Admirals took two points out of Wilkes-Barre for the first time since February 14, 2004.

Brown stopped 12 shots in the lass, while Jonathan Boutin turned aside 29 for his eighth win of the season.

The two clubs will face off once again on Wednesday at the Scope in Norfolk, before the Penguins return home to host the Portland Pirates next Friday at 7:05pm.
