Albany Devils News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - For the third consecutive game, Lowell and Springfield went past regulation to decide the outcome and for the third straight game, it was the Falcons getting the better of the Devils with a 3-2 decision in overtime on Saturday at Tsongas Arena.
Hoping to put an end to their eight-game winless streak, things looked good for Lowell when Barry Tallackson put his team up 2-1 at 8:35 of the third period. After Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre rushed up to the blueline to kick down a Falcons' clearing attempt, the puck skittered over to Ryan Murphy down low. He quickly backhanded a pass in front for Tallackson, who had his first shot stopped by the skate of Devyn Dubnyk, but was able to knock in the rebound for his 14th goal of the season.
The Devils would not be able to escape regulation with the win after an icing call brought the face-off back into their zone. Ryan O'Marra won the draw back to T.J. Kemp who fired a quick wrister that was deflected into the top left corner by Stephane Goulet to tie the game 2-2 with just 1:50 left in the third.
In the extra session, Erik Rasmussen nearly won it for Lowell with a stuff shot in front, but a kick save by Dubnyk sent an odd-man rush the other way. Leading the 2-on-1, Ben Simon kept the puck himself, throwing a shoulder fake before beating Frank Doyle with a low wrist shot at 2:06 of overtime. Doyle finished the game with 22 saves overall.
The Devils picked up the first goal of the game at 7:05 of the first period when Noah Clarke collected a loose puck on the far circle and sniped a quick turn-around shot that found its way through the five-hole of Dubnyk. Clarke's 13th marker of the season ended a 147:27 scoring drought for Lowell.
A minute later the Devils were back on the power play and looking to extend their lead, but instead it was Springfield tying the score 1-1 at 8:32 on Marc Pouliot's shorthanded goal. Pouliot fell to the ice making a move on the Lowell defenseman, but was still able to poke check the puck into the back of the net.
Lowell finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Devils host the Worcester Sharks for Dollar Dawg Night on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:05 p.m. All hot dogs will be just $1 for all fans in attendance. Tickets start at just $10; call the Devils office at (978) 458-PUCK for more information or visit www.lowelldevilshockey.com.
