P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 4-3

Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins scored four unanswered goals to defeat the Portland Pirates 4-3 Saturday evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got goals from Sean Curry, Pascal Pelletier, Jeff Hoggan, and Matt Hendricks. The 35-7-2-1 Atlantic Division leading P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday to face the Worcester Sharks at 2:05 p.m. Providence moves eight points ahead of the second place Hartford Wolf Pack.

The Pirates scored first at the 9:54 mark of the opening period. Petteri Wirtanen took a shot and the puck went off P-Bruins net minder Tuukka Rask and into the net. Bobby Ryan and Geoff Platt recorded the assists. Portland opened up a 2-0 advantage minutes later at the 13:51 mark. Brett Festerling took a shot from the left boards and the puck was tipped into the net by Ryan, waiting in the slot. Wirtanen grabbed the second assist as the Pirates went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

In the second period the Pirates took a 3-0 advantage only 59 seconds in. Portland had a 2-on-1 breakaway as Tyler Bouck took the initial shot and Stephen Dixon scored off the rebound. Brian Salcido picked up the second assist. Providence answered back though, with two power play goals in the period, the first at the 11:58 mark, only four seconds into the power play. Jeff Hoggan won the face off and sent the puck to Curry at the top of the slot. His shot got past Pirates goaltender Mike McKenna and into the net for his tenth goal of the season. At the 17:05 mark the P-Bruins scored on the man-advantage again, this time 20 seconds into the power play. Curry passed the puck behind the net to Martins Karsums who sent the puck through the crease to Pelletier at the back door. With McKenna on the opposite side of the net Pelletier shot the puck under the crossbar and into the net for his 25th goal of the season. The Pirates went into the second intermission leading 3-2.

Providence tied the game at three at the 10:45 mark of the third period. T.J. Trevelyan held the puck behind the Pirates net and fed it in front for Hoggan, who scored his 19th goal of the season. Brett Skinner recorded the second assist. The P-Bruins finished off the comeback at the 18:51 mark. While the P-Bruins were making a line change Hendricks stayed on the ice and picked up the puck along the left boards in the Pirates zone. He took a quick shot, which surprised McKenna and went past him and into the net. For Hendricks it was his 13th goal of the season as the P-Bruins went on to the 4-3 victory.

Rask stopped 30 of 33 shots for the P-Bruins, while McKenna made 39 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The Atlantic Division-leading P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Sunday versus the Worcester Sharks at 2:05 p.m. Providence is also home Wednesday, February 6 against the Milwaukee Admirals and Friday, February 8 against the Wolf Pack for Winter Hat Night presented by Amica Insurance and Wood & Wire Fence Company.
