Adirondack Phantoms News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The line of Frederik Cabana, Darroll Powe and Triston Grant combined for five points to lead a multifaceted scoring effort as the Philadelphia Phantoms knocked off the Binghamton Senators 5-1 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday night. A dozen Phantoms contributed at least one point to the win, which grew the team's lead in the East Division to nine points over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hershey and Albany.

Binghamton actually scored first in the contest, taking a 1-0 lead with 6:13 remaining in the first period. Shawn Weller backhanded a shot from the slot past Scott Munroe for the early advantage.

It ended up being the only dent in Munroe's otherwise flawless night. Meanwhile, the offense started up late in the period when Powe tied the score with just 14.9 seconds to play. Powe had the puck on the right wing and had defensemen closing in on him, so he backhanded the puck towards the net. It bounced off the ice, hit goaltender Brian Elliott in the shoulder and went in, making it a 1-1 contest at the first intermission.

Cabana scored what would turn out to be the game winner just 3:07 into the second period. He was part of a scrum in the Binghamton crease that also involved Powe and Grant, who was celebrating his 24th birthday. Cabana was the one to poke the puck home for the 2-1 advantage. That stood through the second intermission.

Philadelphia ended any doubt with three more goals in the third period. The Phantoms first cashed in on a power play opportunity 6:10 into the period. Oskars Bartulis closed in a smidge from the left point, put a slap pass towards the cage and Pete Zingoni re-directed it with the backhand for his team-leading 17th goal of the season.

Kyle Greentree then continued his hot hand with a goal at the 10:46 mark. He had a puck behind the net and performed an effective wraparound maneuver to tuck it past Elliott. The goal was his seventh point in his last four games.

Denis Tolpeko wrapped up the scoring with another power play marker with 3:33 remaining. He took a puck off the right wall, weaved his way into the circle and snapped a wrister past Elliott for the 5-1 lead.

Powe and Cabana were named first and second star, respectively, with a goal and an assist apiece, while Zingoni earned third star honors. Munroe took the win with 33 saves on 34 shots, while Elliott absorbed the loss with 39 saves on 44 Philadelphia bids.

The win is the Phantoms 31st of the season, meaning that in 49 games the team has matched its entire 80-game win total of a year ago. It also caps a perfect two-game weekend for the club. Their record of 31-15-1-2 gives them 65 points and a nine-point lead over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Hershey and Albany, which are all tied with 56 points apiece.

The game started a five-game road stretch for the Phantoms, which will resume next Wednesday on the very same rink with another rmatchup against the Senators. The Phantoms return to the Wachovia Spectrum on Tuesday, Feb. 12 to face the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05. Tickets are available at the Wachovia Complex box office, online at ComcastTIX.com or phantomshockey.com, or by phone at 1-800-298-4200.
