Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Charlotte, NC--Mattias Ekholm scored a pair of power play goals and Magnus Hellberg stopped 19 shots for his fourth shutout of the season as the Milwaukee Admirals snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Charlotte Checkers Saturday night.
The Admirals stormed out of the locker room to outshoot the Checkers 16-5 in the first period and 26-19 in the game.
Milwaukee struck first with a power play goal at 13:30 of the first period. Brad Winchester was camped on the right post and fed a pass to the top of the left circle for Ekholm. Ekholm's wrist shot went through the legs of Checkers goalie Rob Madore. The goal was Ekholm's seventh of the season and fourth on the power play. Winchester and Patrick Cehlin recorded the assists.
After a scoreless second period, Milwaukee stretched the lead to 2-0 at 1:46 of the third period. Joe Piskula fired a shot on net that was stopped, but a scramble ensued. Juuso Puustinen finally spun and slid a shot through a few defenders into an empty net for his 14th goal of the season. Winchester and Daniel Bang recorded the assists.
Just 68 seconds later the Admirals' Ekholm scored his second power play goal of the game. The penalty which led to the power play was drawn by Scott Valentine, the Milwaukee defenseman-turned-forward, who was hooked by Chris Terry of the Checkers at 2:21 of the third period. Ekholm snapped a shot from the top of the right circle over Madore's shoulder for his eighth goal of the season.
The Admirals and Checkers are back in action Sunday afternoon in Charlotte. The team returns to Milwaukee next Saturday, April 13 against the Rockford IceHogs.
