Abbotsford Heat News Release
Abbotsford, BC - The Abbotsford Heat were defeated 4-1 by the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings) on Friday night in the first of back-to-back games at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre (AESC).
Grand Rapids forward Landon Ferraro scored twice and added an assist, rookie goalie Petr Mrazek made 22 saves on 23 shots, and the Heat dropped their first of a four-game home stand. Krys Kolanos scored the lone Heat goal in the loss with his 15th of the season.
The Griffins scored the only goal of the first period at 4:11 as Landon Ferraro put the vistors ahead 1-0 with his 20th goal of the season.
Ferrraro's second goal of the night came on the power play and put the Griffins up 2-0 at 7:12 of the second period. The Griffins added an even strength tally just 47 second later, and led 3-0 after 40 minutes of play.
The Heat spoiled Petr Mrazek's shutout bid at 11:16 of the third period, as Krys Kolanos moved to within one goal of the team lead. Ben Walter and Blair Jones earned assists on the only Heat goal. Walter needs six points in the next five games to record 50 points for the seventh consecutive season.
The Griffins would add an empty net tally with 1:46 to play as they collected their 40th win of the season.
Barry Brust made 16 saves on 19 shots in 27:59 of action. Danny Taylor took over for Brust after the third Griffins goal and stopped all 18 shots he faced. The Griffins out-shot the Heat 38-23 in the game.
Abbotsford scored once in five power play opportunities, while the penalty kill allowed a single goal on four Griffins attempts.
The Heat and Griffins close their four-game season series tomorrow at the AESC with a 7:00 PDT faceoff. Ledgeview Golf and Country Club is the game sponsor, presenting special guest and local golf star James Lepp, who will take part in the ceremonial puck drop.
The Heat will conclude their final home stand of the season at the AESC against the North Division-leading Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) next Friday night and Sunday afternoon.
