IceHogs Storm Back against Rivermen

After trailing throughout most of the game, Rockford's Rostislav Olesz registered his second goal, and third point, of the game to help the Rockford IceHogs beat the Peoria Rivermen 5-4 Saturday evening at Carver Arena in front of 6,039 fans.

Before the IceHogs were able to put a shot on goal in the first period, the Rivermen scored twice. First, T.J. Hensick passed the puck below the right circle to Derek Nesbitt, who one-timed it top shelf for his 26th goal of the season. Taylor Chorney also assisted on the goal at 4:23.

Just 1:56 later, Andrew Murray raced the puck up the right side through Rockford's defense. He was able to backhand a pass to Veilleux, who shot the puck past Henrik Karlsson for his first career professional goal in his first game. Evgeny Grachev also was credited with an assist.

Once the IceHogs were able to get a shot on goal, they responded with a goal of their own. Brandon Pirri scored on a wrist shot from between the circles at 10:25 to cut Peoria's lead to 2-1. Jeremy Morin and Olesz both earned assists on the goal. It only took 47 seconds for the Rivermen to regain a two-goal lead. Anthony Nigro skated the puck up the left boards before passing the puck to a streaking Brett Sonne in front of him. Sonne pushed the puck past Karlsson's glove side at 11:12. Brent Regner also assisted on the play.

Rockford added one more goal to round out the first period. Olesz pushed a rebound past Mike McKenna's left leg for his fifth goal of the season at 13:45. Pirri and Shawn Lalonde assisted on the goal, which cut the Rivermen's lead to 3-2.

In the second period, Veilleux almost scored another goal 35 seconds into the frame, but officials determined it didn't go into the net after a review. After multiple fights, Anthony Nigro forced in a rebound from Jani Hakanpaa's shot past Karlsson's skate at 11:38. Chris Bruton also assisted on the goal that gave Peoria a 4-2 lead.

Once again, Rockford was able to respond with a goal of its own. Ryan Stanton pushed a quick outlet pass to Martin St. Pierre, who scored his 24th goal of the year on a breakaway at 14:21.

The IceHogs were able to tie the game in the third frame. On the power play, Adam Clendening faked a slap shot, and snapped the puck past McKenna at 7:28 to even the score 4-4. Hayes and St. Pierre assisted on the game-tying goal.

After outshooting the Rivermen throughout much of the third period, Rockford finally found the back of the net for the game-winning goal. Olesz scored his second goal of the game deflecting a shot from St. Pierre at 17:29 to give the IceHogs a 5-4 lead.

The Rivermen went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Rockford was 1-for-2. The IceHogs outshot the Peoria 37-27, including a 17-5 advantage in the third period.
