Admirals Fall To Wolves 4-3
April 13, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI-The Milwaukee Admirals welcomed back to town their arch-rivals the Chicago Wolves on Friday, and with a 3-1 record this season at the Bradley Center the Wolves gladly accepted the invitation. Ex-Chicago forward Ramzi Abid registered a point in all of Milwaukee's goals against the Wolves for the second time this season, but his efforts were just shy as the Ads couldn't get past Chicago, losing 4-3 in a shootout in their last meeting of the season.
With the possibility of a playoff series against the Wolves looming, Abid has had the hottest hand against the team to the south as his three points tonight gives him seven against his former team in their last three meetings.
Abid assisted on Cal O'Reilly's opening goal in the sixth minute of the first period to give his team the lead, but the Wolves replied with a pair of goals from Andy Delmore and Darren Haydar to steal the lead.
Haydar received a perfectly timed pass from Jason Krog as he crashed to net to set up his 40th goal of the season. The league MVP's back door score was his 15th point against his former team.
"I think both teams compete hard," explained Coach Claude Noel after the game. "There's not a lot of love lost. We were treating it as another game to win."
Abid set up Kim Staal in front of the net even the score with four minutes left in the second, and when rookie of the year Brett Sterling capitalized on a misplayed puck by pulled his team back ahead with a goal at 4:20 in the third it was Abid who socred the game tying goal.
Camped out in front of the net, defenseman Ville Koistinen finessed a quick pass to Abid who had time to settle puck, before poking it into the wide open net with under ten minutes to play.
Haydar had a chance to pull the Wolves ahead for good with a point blank shot as the game clock expired, but his swing missed the bouncing puck as he fell to the ice.
Chicago's first and last shooters in shootout, Sterling and Cory Larose, sent pucks through the five-hole of Pekka Rinne while Milwaukee was unable get a single shot past Michael Garnett.
"We wanted to win," Noel frankly told reporters after the game. "There are some things that we need to make some adjustments. I think both teams will be 'going to school' over the course of the week to figure out what the best tactic is going to be to win the series."
But Noel was obviously tight-lipped about what he thought those adjusts would be.
He explained with a smile, "I have a lot of thoughts, none that I'm going to share with you so they can read it and say, 'Hey!'"
