Bears Beat Up Pens To Win East Division Title
April 13, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
Another convincing win over a respected opponent equals HERSHEY'S first division title in 13 years and the American Hockey League regular season points championship. The BEARS poured it on early and emerged from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with a 6-1 win Friday night at Wachovia Arena.
The BEARS put it away early with five first period goals. Kyle Wilson opened the scoring with his 24th goal of the season on a rebound of an Andy Hedlund shot in the slot. Dave Steckel then picked up a short-handed goal at 6:02 of the first when he picked away a puck from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Micki Dupont. The goal for Steckel was his 30th of the season. After the Pens pulled within one with a goal from Robert Nilsson, the BEARS took over and built up a four-goal lead by intermission. Tomas Fleischmann tipped in a Mike Green shot for his 22nd goal of the season at 9:08 prior to Scott Barney scoring his 10th of the season from Joey Tenute and Matt Hendricks at 10:03. Later in the period, Tenute would add a goal of his own when he roofed a shot past Wilkes-Barre's Nolan Schaefer at 15:54. On the strength of 14 first period shots, the BEARS took a 5-1 lead to the dressing room after one.
The only goal of the second period came late, and came from Wilson at 19:04. Despite 18 Penguin shots to just four for HERSHEY, the BEARS took a 6-1 lead to the dressing room after two with an East Division championship in sight. Neither team would score in the third, and the BEARS assured themselves of home ice throughout the 2007 Calder Cup playoffs with the win.
Notes: The team will travel after the game to Binghamton in preparations for Saturday's game with the Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Forward Peter Vandermeer and defenseman Jamie Hunt were both medically cleared to play this week, and are expected to see time in the lineup at some point this weekend. Tickets for the first home games at GIANT Center for the 2007 Calder Cup Playoffs are on sale at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911. The BEARS last won a division championship in 1993-94 when HERSHEY notched 87 points and the Southern Division Championship.
